Editorial Reviews

2012 collection from the Blues artist influenced by the work of Louis Jordan, Joe Liggins, and B.B. King, which he encountered from his teens into his 20s. He didn't turn to music as a profession until the late '50s, when he was well into his twenties, forming his band the Midnighters in Detroit at the end of the decade. By the early '60s, he had moved to Reno, Nevada, where he began recording as an adjunct to his performances in local clubs before moving on to Los Angeles. He recorded for various labels, including Kent and Chess' Checker Records division during the early to mid-'60s. He had extended stints with Jewel Records and Chess from the late '60s into the early '70s, and recorded until the end of the '80s. He performed throughout the south, and later Texas and California, during that decade, and later toured Europe, including performances as part of the International Jazz Fest during the '80s.

Little Joe Blue spent a majority of his career recording singles for a variety of labels and this cd collects many of them. Blue's voice was quite reminiscent of BB King's but he had his own style and didn't simply copy everything that King did. The style of blues is slick, urban blues with horns and plenty of lead guitar playing from Blue. Present here is his big hit, the classic slow blues "Dirty Work Going On" and Blue would continue recording songs along that theme, his woman cheating on him. This was not all he sung about, though. "Don't Tax Me In" is a social commentary about poor people. "Doin' Some Serious Living" is about pretty much what the title says and the two-part "Give Me an Hour in Your Garden" is a humorous innuendo blues.
While Little Joe Blue never enjoyed the success of many of his peers, he has left behind some classic blues music for us to remember him by. Pick up this CD as well as the Evejim collection of his two late 80's LP's.

Little Joe Blue is one heck of a blues singer, 2nd maybe only to B.B. King, his main influence. Blue enjoyed a somewhat succesful career, with just one hit, but it got him on the charts, and hsi records always have sold very well.
Blue has a gutsy voice, a very appealing baritone, that sounds truthful and powerful. One of his more famous tunes is Shopping Instead Blues, however this whole disc is great, maybe just one dud, but otherwise all the tunes are gems, and Little Joe Blue can uplift even the most mundane arrangement. These 60's urban blues sides, are powerful and timeless, and a lot of fun. An overall great straight blues vocal cd.

Is this who Ethel Waters was singing about in Happiness Is Just A Thing Called Joe, "Little Joe, Little Joe, Little Joe," OK so maybe she wasn't, but this often underrated and forgotten blues great should be more well known then he is, he only really had one major hit song, but he recorded a timeless version of "Shopping Instead", which is normally associated with BB King. In fact Little Joe Blues was inspired by BB. Though Little Joe Blues was born in the early 30's, and active in teh early 50's, he didn't start recording officially until the 60's, when he had already had experience and by taht time was in his musical prime for his d ebut recordings. A meaty voiced bluesman, in the BB King tradition. This is straight blues, that is very fun, and can be played at BBQ's and party's! Fun music, with maybe one dated track with backup singers, however most of the cd is timeless blues, and Little Joe can make anything sound great even on the track with pnsy backup singers. Great CD!
