I think this is a really good CD. It contains 24 tracks, and has a great selection of recordings. All of the tracks are from the '60s.
All but two of the Top 40 songs that the group scored ("Tapioca Tundra" and "That Was Then, This Is Now") are on this collection, at least if you count "Valleri" (see below). As I've said before, "Tapioca Tundra" seems to be the most elusive of the group's hits, being mysteriously left off of most compilations (single-disc ones, anyway). Even ones that include "That Was Then" (one of the group's '80s "reunion" recordings) seem to usually exclude "Tapioca Tundra." "Valleri" (which was the song that "Tundra" backed) has the "cold" ending on this CD (which it seems to have on most CDs) instead of the fade-out used on the original single, but that doesn't bother me one bit; in fact, I prefer the "cold" ending. (Besides "Valleri," "Tapioca Tundra" and "That Was Then," the group's other Top 40s are "Last Train To Clarksville [their first single as well as their first #1!], "I'm A Believer," "Steppin' Stone," "A Little Bit Me," "Girl I Knew Somewhere," "Pleasant Valley Sunday," "Words," "Daydream Believer," and "D.W. Washburn.") A few of these tracks were (like "Tapioca Tundra") hits as B-sides of hit A-sides!
In addition to having most of the hits, this CD also has several songs that appeared on singles but didn't become hits: "Porpoise Song," "Tear Drop City," "Listen To The Band," "Someday Man," the Monkees theme song (which backed "That Was Then"), and "Randy Scouse Git" (which was the B-side of an '80s remix of "Daydream Believer" and was a '60s hit in England).
Also here are a bunch of tracks that only appeared on albums: "I Wanna Be Free," " She," "Mary, Mary," "Look Out," "Forget That Girl," Shades Of Gray," "What Am I Doing Hangin' 'Round?", and "Cuddly Toy."
Most of the tracks on this CD are in stereo; the exceptions are "Steppin' Stone," "A Little Bit Me," "Pleasant Valley Sunday," "Words," and "Listen To The Band," all of which are the "single versions" (that is, they have the "parts" that they had on the original singles). Stereo mixes of most of those "single versions" do exist, but most seem to be rare. (The stereo mix of "A Little Bit Me" doesn't have all of the same "parts" as the mono mix; for one thing, it omits the handclaps. Also, there is a stereo mix of "Words" that seems to omit the echo on the backing vocals.)
Many of the Monkees' best recordings are presented on this comp. For a group that (supposedly) wasn't "real," the Monkees sure put out some good (and great) music!

This one is all you need if your looking into a Monkees "Best Of". Really, what can you say about 4 complete strangers put together to do a TV show capitalizing on The Beatles success? Besides that had the balls to say to management that they wanted to do their own songs! So if your looking for a nice collection of tracks covering this band, get this version of a "Best Of". You'll be glad you did, besides everyone has heard their songs and the CD speaks for itself!

Nice sound on these two discs; wonder if BOTH could have fit on one disc however.

Despite this collection's "cheap"-looking packaging, it is really not bad (at least not content-wise; see below). Like so many other Monkees compilations, it focuses only on the group's '60s material. It includes all of the group's '60s hits (even the elusive "Tapioca Tundra"!) as well as several other good songs that you rarely if ever find on Monkees compilations. However, a few of the selections are kind of weak ("The Poster" has to be the lamest one of all). And, it's missing two of my very favorite ('60s) Monkees songs, "Mary, Mary" and "Shades Of Gray." In fact, for some reason, it doesn't include ANY songs from the Headquarters album, which is peculiar. (Another peculiar thing is that the set is heavy on songs from The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees album; almost the entire contents of that album appear on it!) Also, I have no idea why it's two CDs, since it would have fit on a single CD with about twelve minutes to spare. It isn't a great task to switch CDs, but it's still a bit annoying (although I suppose you could burn them onto one CD, and maybe add a couple of extra tracks, or make whatever other alterations). Overall, this is a decent Monkees collection, but not a really great one. The last time I checked the prices for this collection at this site, the used copies were a bit pricey, and the new ones were a LOT pricey. (I seem to recall it being pretty cheap back when I got it.) So although this has a lot of good songs, there are better, and cheaper, Monkees comps out there.

I have loved the monkeys since I seen them on the reruns on tv in the 70's. Have been meaning to buy their cd for a long time but didn't want to buy one with a few hits and then lots of unknown songs. This cd fits the bill perfectly, it has all the favourites and a few lesser known ones. Would totally recommend this cd, I've played it so much in the car that my son is getting sick of it, but I never will. To his totally embarrassment I played it while he had a friend in the car and to his surprise his friend loved it and even recongized some of the songs; I think I have found a new fan. yay!

A good buy

Bought this for a good all-round Monkees CD and it is just that. There are a couple of favourites missing so I might be tempted to go for the Monkee Mania CD at some point too, but this is a great introduction.

A GOOD AMERICAN POP GROUP I GREW FOND OF IN THE SIXTIES AND I STILL ENJOY THEIR MUSIC TODAY. ALL OF THEIR SONGS ARE VERY GOOD VALUE AND GREAT TO LISTEN TO. I LIKED I'M A BELIEVER, MONKEES THEME, LAST TRAIN TO CLARKESVILLE AND ALL THE REST ARE MOST ENJOYABLE.
