Editorial Reviews

Five of Eric Carle's most popular stories bring the wonders of the world around young children into focus. Gentle, colorful music not only enhances the beautiful jewel-like animation but delights the senses as well. Learn to count when THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR eats his way to a magical transformation. In PAPA, PLEASE GET THE MOON FOR ME, a little girl is fascinated by the changing face of the moon. Learning to speak doesn't come easily for THE VERY QUIET CRICKET. Will he ever learn? When THE MIXED-UP CHAMELEON visits a zoo, the experience teaches him the meaning of being yourself. Imagination is the magic carpet to a rainbow world of music in I SEE A SONG. But can you really see a song?

This is similar to the Scholastic Video Collection series but it's not the same. It's made by Disney. I'm sure you already know what the stories are. They are nice and slow. The scenes are very true to what the drawings in the books are like. The animation is nice.

Most of the reviewers seem to have bought this for kids about 2 years old. My daughter is 4 and enjoys it. The back of the dvd says ages 5 and under.

My daughters favorite part is the bonus feature. It's a game called Eating Through the Week. There's all 7 days of the week and you have to help the caterpillar choose the food he will eat for that day. Each day has 3 choices and the child moves the arrows on the remote to move the caterpillar to the correct choice. Then they press the enter button. As an example, a pleasant voice says, "Today is Monday and on Monday the very hungry caterpillar needs to eat one apple. Can you help the very hungry caterpillar find one apple? Just move the highlight over the picture of one apple and press enter on your remote control. Great! You helped the very hungry caterpillar eat through one apple on Monday! But he's still hungry. Now it's Tuesday and.........", etc. It's actually a very cute game and the best part of the entire dvd, in my opinion. It's too bad that there isn't at least one more game to choose from. I wish there were games like that on the Scholastic videos, it would enhance them so much. This is the first time my daughter has played a game on a dvd and thinks it's the best.

So, just an fyi....if you are reading these reviews and decide you would like to purchase this, go with the dvd not the vhs. You can find the vhs for cheaper....but I would assume you'll miss out on the game. We got this dvd from the library.

We bought this in addition to our collection of Eric Carle board books for our two year old son. The narration and animation are beautifully done, and true to the books. The stories are simple and quiet but held my very active toddler's attention completely. I wish there were more of these stories available on DVD.

We have scholastic books-on-movie format, such as the "Goodnight Gorilla", and this by far is the best I have seen. I love to watch it with my 2 year old before bedtime. It is the perfect way to wind down for a good night's sleep. She is enthralled by watching her favorite stories that we read together come to life. This is beautifully done with music, animation, and you can even have the words show (you need to choose the option for the hard of hearing, and the words will come up on the screen).

Absolutely well done, Disney! I wish there were more out there like this one!

I promote BOOKS for my children, not videos. However, this video is exceptional. Beautifully done, it is very much in keeping with the spirit of the books. 'Papa, Please Get the Moon For Me' is wonderful. The music is serene.

My two year old and I originally watched clips of this on YouTube and were utterly enchanted. I purchased the DVD and was very disappointed by the Disney narration. The original has British accents and a fairly dry delivery. The Disney version has that same guy who does the "Look what's coming out of the Disney vault!" commercials and his inflection is just awful. I will try to find a copy of the Scholastic version used and donate this one.

My wife is a kindergarten teacher from Berlin Germany who now lives in USA. Eric Carle is a native German and is famous in Germany with Kindergarten types of teachers. He was also an accomplished marketing exec before turning to his real love - children stories. The quality of this DVD is similar to Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven. It's surprising so few are aware of Eric Carle's ability to relate to small children in the US. This is a real gem. Delightful, brilliant! Julian Nott composes the music which awsome. If you have small children and like fine classical music, give yourself a special treat and order this DVD!

I found a video online of a man reading "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" and let my four-year-old daughter watch it as part of a homeschooling activity that went with her lesson (we didn't have the book). She loved the story so much and wanted to watch the video frequently. One day on Netflix I discovered "The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Other Stories" so I let her watch it. She loved every story in the video and it became something she asked to watch quite frequently. However, Netflix removed it from their "watch instantly" list very soon after. I didn't want her to go without her beloved show, so I looked for the DVD on Amazon and found it and for a great price, too!

The video is a half an hour long and includes the following stories:
1. The Very Hungry Caterpillar
2. Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me
3. The Very Quiet Cricket
4. The Mixed-Up Chameleon
5. I See A Song

It also includes a bonus feature called "Game Time." This feature allows your child to play an educational game called "Eating Through the Week" with the use of the remote. My daughter loves this game. I wish it had more games for her to play.

The illustrations in this video match the illustrations in the book. The narrator's voice is pleasant as well. The animation is great (it's by Disney) and everything is true to the books. This is a great DVD for children 5 and under who like Eric Carle and his stories.
