About Us
Merge Records was started in the summer of 1989 by Laura Ballance & Mac McCaughan, the same summer they formed the band Superchunk in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The first couple of Merge releases were cassettes (remember those?) by Wwax and Bricks, followed by the first Superchunk (then known only as "Chunk") 7-inch single.
The 7-inch was the format of choice during the first three years of the label, with cash borrowed from friends to finance projects (including singles from Erectus Monotone, Angels of Epistemology, and more Superchunk). Various bedrooms served as Merge HQ until 1992, when the first Merge full-length release, Tossing Seeds by Superchunk, was released on CD, LP, and cassette. Starting that year, Merge moved from one charming-yet-run-down office to another until 2001, when we finally made the move from Chapel Hill down the road to a fine old building all our own in historic downtown Durham, NC.

Editorial Reviews
A VERY SHE & HIM CHRISTMAS is a wonderful collection of holiday tunes from two of musics most impressive artists Zooey Deschanel (She) & M. Ward (Him). Inspired by seminal holiday albums by the likes of the Carpenters, Vince Guaraldi, the Beach Boys, Elvis Presley and more, She & Him have set out to create an intimate holiday recording of Christmas classics that helps bring new emotions out of old songs. A VERY SHE & HIM CHRISTMAS sees the duo stepping back slightly from the layered, lush aesthetic of their critically acclaimed second album, VOLUME TWO. Deschanel and Ward let the songs speak for themselves, oftentimes recording them with just acoustic guitar and vocals. Consistent in everything are the elements that have made She & Him one of the most loved bands of the last few years Deschanels soulful vocal delivery and Wards impressive guitar work, both sounding as timeless as ever.

Below is my original review:
I have read 2 or 3 other reviews mentioning the vinyl format of this album. None have commented on the sound quality. The sound quality of the recording is average. The sound quality of the pressing below average. I am on my second copy of this vinyl and surface noise is present. Much more so on the first copy (especially on the first track) than the second, the first copy having so much surface noise on the first track that it became unlistenable. The second copy is quiet enough to keep it. On albums like this, I don't expect dead-quiet backgrounds, but when the noise becomes so great that I am compelled to stop the record, I have to draw the line.
However, the physical quality of the pressing makes me want to try one more copy to see if I can get a better physical copy to go with acceptable sound. The first copy looked pretty good, but did have some surface scratches. It had quite a bit of surface noise. The edge of the record was smooth, but the label looked like some of the label was torn off by the press when it was removed. The second copy looked cleaner, but the edges were rough and a bit jagged and the label had random ink spots on it. Both copies had center holes that were very off-center. I would estimate that my needle (on a 9" arm) moves side to side about 1/8" in either direction when playing this record. Fairly disconcerting. The second copy also had a small hop towards the outer edge when playing, but the needle tracked fine.
The vinyl is cool red, and it comes with a little Xmas card (nice touches). But the vinyl is very thin.
I don't expect the world when it comes to fun albums like this. But, I do expect a certain standard of pressing quality. I also expect no surface noise where a novice would listen to this vinyl and think, "That noise is awful. Why would anyone want to listen to the vinyl over the digital copy?" If all records were pressed like this, less people would be turned on to vinyl. 3 stars for physical quality.
Christmas music is just that. It's nice to hear different interpretations to keep it fresh every year. As for quality of the music, I'll keep it at 3 stars for now, but if during future holidays I keep returning to this album, I might raise that to 4 stars.
I cleaned this record (both copies) on a VPI HW-16.5 record cleaner with L'art du Son cleaning fluid. I played it back on a VPI Scout turntable with a Denon 103 cartridge.
Here's the line-up:
1. The Christmas Waltz - Deschanel's clarity with a simple guitar accompaniment is lovely.
2. Christmas Day - Nothing extraordinary, and a bit bouncy, but a new one to me, which I enjoyed just for the novelty.
3. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas - Slow & sweet.
4. I'll Be Home For Christmas - No. So overdone. And done so much better by so many others.
5. Christmas Wish - Another new one to me. Sounds like it was meant to be a jingle for a Coke ad.
6. Sleigh Ride - They add nothing to the 487 other versions already out there, and perhaps detract a bit.
7. Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree - Brenda Lee wannabe & falls sadly short.
8. Silver Bells - Deschanel's voice and the accompanying ukelele are absolutely perfect for this song. The jewel in the somewhat tarnished crown of this album.
9. Baby, It's Cold Outside - Worst cover of this song I've ever heard.
10. Blue Christmas - Not bad but tries too hard, with little effect.
11. Little Saint Nick - Brian Wilson & Mike Love should sue.
12. The Christmas Song - A nice finale for that beautiful voice. Pacing is lovely.
I would suggest listening to the samples and--hey, if you love the album, then collect the whole set. But if you only find a few worthy candidates like I did, download the singles.
All of the songs on the record are memorable and resonate a nostalgic flare. One never grows tired of hearing "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" or "Rocking' Around the Christmas Tree." And with the mention of the Beach Boys, listeners will find "Christmas Day" and "Little Saint Nick" a delight to hear.
It is always a pleasure to see a new generation of musical artists continuing to perform these holiday melodies especially during this day and age. And with the convenience of digital recordings that are released, it is always nice to know that vinyl and CD formats are still available. With the release of "A Very She and Him Christmas" one of the treats of having this CD is that it comes with a few extras that usually does not come with a digital download, brief liner notes that come in the form of a red envelope that looks like a Christmas card.

They have a great song selection well preformed with their own She & Him style.
They both have really sweet voices to suit the songs and they even manage to make Ukulele apt to a wintery Christmas. There are bells and smiles that just make the festivities. I love this album, it beats Meriah Carrey and Destiny's Child hands down (why do those Christmas songs exist?).
This truly is a She & Him Christmas. :)
Peaceful rather than party-like. They obviously take their Christmas music seriously, its very enjoyable
with a snowball or two by the Christmas tree next to the fireside.
Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas is a highlight amongst the many chilled out goodies here.
4 stars rather than 5 because, well, only because its not Elvis, Slade, John Lennon, Nat or Bing.
But not far off.
If there is a need for Christmas party for friends or family or work Christmas due, these Christmas CD is must. Good entertaining songs with a nice She&Him style twist!
