~ His eyes did cause some kind of weird visceral reaction in me like no other, almost as if we shared a connection, like we were kindred spirits.~

I had the privilege of reading Very Wicked Things early, and to say it knocked me on my tail is an understatement. One of the main things I love about Ilsa's writing is that you never know what you are going to get. You judge a book by its cover, you see small teasers, and you THINK you know what you are in for. Well let me tell you, you literally have NO IDEA. The depth that she pulls from her characters, from the stars to the ones that have one scene, is literary genius at its finest. It's magical. It's awe-inspiring. It's breathtaking. There just aren't enough adjectives that can adequately describe the emotions that coursed in my veins throughout this book. Heck, even merely calling it a book seems like a disservice, for it was SO much more than that. Two broken souls, searching for forgiveness from each other, from those around them, but mostly from themselves. It's a journey, and it's one that will take you from the highest highs to the lowest lows. From the first page until the last, I had no clue how it would end. I had my hopes and I had my fears, but never could I have imagined the outcome.

~Perhaps I've given up, Because even at my young age, I recognized the truth: my somedays were killing me one dream at a time.~

VWT is the story of Dovey and Cuba. While there are very small mentions to characters in Very Bad Things, for all intents and purposes this is a standalone novel. And for me to admit that is a feat in itself if you know me. When I read Ilsa's debut book last year, it was my very first diamond in the rough. To find those kids of books are rare.

I read the introduction book first then this book and I'm going to be honest, I wondered why I bought a high school love story. I thought I had this story all figured out before I began reading this book. I was o so wrong. This book is nothing like what I expected. In my opinion, the writing was superb. The characters were both strong, loving, and broken. Beautiful love story.

Ok, I read Very Bad Things, book one in this series and loved it. I read it almost a year and half ago and I still remember the characters and plot. That tells me it was really good in my book. I was so excited to read this next book that I bumped it up my very LONG TBR list and it didn’t disappoint.
You know you’re reading a good book when you can’t put it down and when you HAVE to, you’re counting the minutes until you can pick it back up. That was this book for me. I became a part of the Briarcrest world and I felt like I was living and breathing Dovey and Cuba’s relationship. It’s hard to categorize this book because there’s a lot that takes place in the pages. There’s angst, of god is there ANGST! Ilsa is a master writer of angst. I was in turmoil waiting for these two to get their HEA. And Ilsa made me wait so long…it was the sweetest torture.
The characters… I love how strong and capable Dovey is. She is one tough cookie with a huge heart. Blood is thicker than water? Not to Dovey and when you become her family, she’ll do anything, has done everything, to keep you safe. Cuba is battling with himself and refuses to believe he deserves love. He punishes himself daily while living a lie every day. Every day he plants a killer smile on his face and acts like the man on campus his reputation claims. But I really think one must be brave and strong to not let that much pain and emotion out… Cuba has a lot of demons he’s battling, and Dovey won’t put up with his fake outer presence.
“Here’s the thing, Cuba. Somedays will eat you alive. They’re promises you make to fool yourself into believing everything will turn out right in the end. Someday, your ship will come in. Someday, you’ll tell me why you’re an a**.

VERY WICKED THINGS solidified Ilsa as one of my favorite new adult authors and I am even more excited to see what else she's got up her sleeve for this series. Ilsa Madden-Mills has a natural storytelling talent that brings out powerful emotions from her readers. With her exceptional writing skills, Ilsa brings her characters to life and has your heart bleeding for her characters. Like Nora and Leo in Very Bad Things, Cuba and Dovey will carve out a place in your heart and will have you thinking about them well after you've finished their story. Very Wicked Things was a stellar follow-up to a series that I have grown to love and cannot get enough of.

Can I say how much I loved this book? It just clicked with me. I smiled, I cried, I got mad and I was devastated. There is so much to this book. This book is full of angst, heartache, love and redemption. Cuba and Dovey are truly two of the most heartbreaking characters I have read about. They are both so emotionally scarred by their past, they try to portray themselves as different people while trying to protect their hearts. I was so floored by lengths they go to, in order, to spare themselves and each other pain is crazy mad. But because of their past, I understood exactly why they did it. Cuba has been nicknamed "Hollywood". No one even tries to see the real Cuba. All they see is the football hero, jock, hottie heartthrob. Very few people see the real Cuba that is hidden behind a big wall of armor to protect himself. Then there is Dovey, from the wrong side of the tracks. At the rich kids school on scholarship. She has this big ball of pride that gets in the way of a good heart. The feelings, intensity, drama, connections and circumstances surrounding their past and their present create such a beautiful story. A story that is so full of heart wrenching emotion and hope that will keep you hooked to the pages. I loved this book!
