Woah where did this come from ?!? I came across this classic by accident but man is it one of the dopest albums I've heard in a while. Consisting of 16 tracks, all are solid with some subtle instrumentals that transition through the tracks nicely. If you like artists like Def Jux's El-P, Cage, or even RhymeSayers' P.O.S., you will dig this! I listened to Amazon's 30 second samples, then downloaded it for free, then purchased the physical disc just to support these two artists. Musically, it's one of those that can play as background music in just about any social situation; or even better late at night solo w/ some headphones. Sadly, 'Vessel' has been out a few months with little public static. Though, this seems to be the case with all the best records, films, books, etc. Check it out!

Do yourself a favor...

I don't normally write reviews, but Dark Time Sunshine is worth the effort. I got excited when I heard Mike Martinez (aka Onry Ozzborn, Reason, Count Draven, and most recently Cape Cowen) was involved in a new project. But I had no idea just how amazing it was going to be. Martinez has evolved and taken on a different tone with DTS than his previous works. There's a little more light to his darkness. If that makes any sense? Zavala's beats are unique, blending boom bap style with a trip-hop spaciness to form a sonic landscape that seems to lay the perfect framework for Martinez's vocals. Each song stands apart and shines on its own, yet flows with the entire album to create a larger whole.

In contrast to the other two albums in DTS's discography, Vessel contains guest appearances from a grip of hip hop masterminds, P.O.S., Aesop Rock, Solillaquists of Sound, Ceschi, Qwel and more. Albums with so many guest vocalists can occasionally end up coming across as cluttered and you forget just whose album your listening to, but with Vessel, everyone fits snugly in their role and upholds the vibe of the album nicely.

I've been fortunate enough to catch these guys live a couple of times in the last year and they're every bit as amazing as I could have hoped for. I've luckily been able to pick up hard copies of their other two albums "believeyoume" and "Cornucopia" at their shows. "believeyoume", available as a free download, and "Cornucopia", previously a tour-only release, can both be found through Fake Four, Inc.'s website. In addition, Zavala will be releasing the Vessel instrumentals on May 10th.

Vessel went down in my books as one of the best releases of 2010 and received similar honors in every review of the album that I've read. Do yourself a favor and don't let this album pass you by. And do yourself another favor by picking up their other albums as well. I can't wait to see what else these guys have in store for the future.

I accidentally discovered these guys on Spotify and immediately fell in love with their sound. As a hip hop purist/officionado/connoisseur/addict, I'm constantly looking for new music/my next fix. These guys are it. Amazing collaborations with some of my favorite artists included (Aesop Rock, P.O.S. etc.) Apparently this album dropped a few years ago. I only wish I would have discovered it sooner.
