Designed to bring you even closer to the barefoot sensation, Vibram FiveFingers radically reduced overall weight and material with a more breathable mesh upper to deliver true, performance-driven footwear. Minimum rubber thickness in the outsole maximizes "foot feel" and flexibility, while a soft TPU midsole further reduces thickness and weight for natural movement. This is my second pair of SeeYa's after wearing out my first pair (after a year of abuse, over 15 distance races). Made a half-marathon personal record of 1:34 in the last pair, and am currently breaking in the second pair.
These are light and fast. To me the sole is still too stiff around the arch, but the light breezy fabric on the uppers is good for cooling. The Velcro strap is stupidly unnecessary (the shoes should fit like a glove if you size using the instructions on the FiveFingers website) so I cut my straps off to lose the few grams. The thin rubberized sole areas are placed well on the ball, toes, and heal and it took me a year of heavy mileage to wear them down (under the ball as expected for the running form).
I run in a desert, and these can't be used in midday in summer (the heat transfers too well), but only masochists like me are out running then anyway; fine for morning/evening when the pavement cools.
Would recommend for people with barefoot and/or minimalist experience. Newbie's should be careful to work up mileage slowly... perhaps using another FiveFinger that provides a bit more support/cushioning until you get your muscles and ligaments built up (these are light and fast for a reason!)
These are a poor substitute... The sole seems to be made out of the same plastic material that gallon milk jugs are made out of. So traction is poor from the get go and once they get any kind water or damp surface, they might as well be ice skates... Thankfully they fit snugly since the 'velcro closure" is garbage... A light breeze lifts it open...
I have been a champion of Vibram, even when everyone trashed them after the lawsuits started happening... They got me running again. period! They are not for everyone.
Sadly, the shoe designs and availability have suffered since...
I have a brand new pair of NIKE AIRMAX AND ADIDAS BLADE AND they don't feel as good as these, I mean for what am going to use them for, which is weightlifting, power walking on treadmill and for long walks too. I just hope my review can help you!
Other pros: SUPER LIGHT, and VERY GLOW IN THE DARK
Cons: not sure how well the base would wear for outdoor use, but again, I'm not outside running 5Ks. These strike me as better indoor exercise shoes. I'd look at other Vibram lines for heavy outdoor wear.
