These have no support they are built as a "bare foot" concept of foot gear. I incrementally, over months, developed the foot/leg toughness and strength necessary before I began doing up to 20 miles a day in this foot gear. I ran/walked/jogged 70+ miles a week for 2+ years over all terrain and in all area weather conditions (not a cold climate, central TX) with the treksport foot bed. I went through 4 or 5 pair in that time. I was going through regular shoes much faster.
You can consistently run in these until there is a hole straight through to the ball of your bare foot. There is no soft mid-sole either to cushion impact or break down over time. I used these because the mid-sole of other running shoes would break down too fast and would start to injure me. With no "heal strike" you run in a different mechanical technique to cushion impact that utilizes the ankle and calf, this causes great pressure on the ball of the foot and toes. The foot bed is not very comfortable for hard pack, concrete or road like conditions I found an occlusion in the middle of the ball of the foot and a hot spot on the joint (the one at the foot not at the knuckle) of the big toe because of a large amount of tread which I had to cut down with a razor knife this eliminated that hot spot.
The other major concern was protection of the sides of the toes. The thin material wears away fast. This should be fixed by allowing the actual plastic of the foot bed to come at least half way up tapered thin between the toes. Nails, twigs I have had plenty of pokes but few actual cuts. I like that every toe has its own compartment but the amount of movement you exercise there is pretty minimal may be the toes could be connected to the first joint at the toe bed or something like that. Be advised of this if you plan to be where there may be a lot of thorns, potential for nails or wooded areas this is a risk.
The traction and control you have with these is great, awesome for impromptu rock climbing, off road hill or mountain terrain. These ones are thick enough for gravel but you will feel the occasional sharp rock bite at the sole.
You must become familiar with the European sizing and I found the sizing to be good but I do not like the strapping design on this model at all the strap will not seat your heal in the back of the shoe it has a tendency to pull the toes tighter instead of the heal. I took the strap off and made up my own "lacing" configuration this fixed the problem but I wish they would fix the design.
