About the Author

Haidee-Jo Summers is an award-winning artist whose work has appeared in numerous exhibitions worldwide. Oils are her preferred medium, though she has written and taught on the subjects of acrylics, watercolours, gouache, inks, pastels and mixed media. Over the years she has worked on many different subjects which include still life, flowers, gardens, cats, interiors and portraits as well as landscapes, but in the last five years she has been completely hooked on plein air painting. She has always preferred painting from life, and has no qualms about painting anywhere, no matter how busy or crowded the setting, how complicated the scene or how difficult the weather.

The majority of her work is fairly small (10 x 12in up to 16 x 20in) and painted entirely on location with no finishing off afterwards. She also paints much larger studio paintings using small plein air studies as a starting point, together with any accompanying sketches and photos where needed. In the studio she is able to be more experimental in approach; having the luxury of time makes it possible to explore building up in layers, rubbing back and glazing.

Haidee-Jo's career has developed rapidly since graduating from Leicester University in 1994, and since then she has received numerous accolades, including the Young Artist's Award two years in a row by the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the SAA Artist of the Year award in 2012, and more recently her work has been chosen for the prestigious Royal Society of Marine Artists exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London. She was elected a full member of the Royal Institute of Oil painters in 2017.

Exactly as I hoped. If you have followed Haidee-Jo, then you certainly have noticed how fresh and spontaneous, yet still grounded, they are. Her use of focal color is spot on. I've been painting off and on for over 10 years. As I critique my work, it feels like something is missing. I found her comments on finding what you want your art to say heartfelt. And she lets us know that going through these rough spots are part of the growth that we need.

It's a great book for someone starting out too. She covers basic set ups and a little color theory. But I think it's perfect for inspiring an artist.

As others have said, I too have numerous books on painting techniques. I’ve also taken a number of painting courses. I highly recommend Haidee-Jo’s book because it fills in a lot of the gaps in my knowledge, and contains advice I haven’t encountered elsewhere. For example, her advice on lost and found edges is invaluable. The writing is clear, logical, and takes the aspiring oil painter through alla prima and more layered approaches. It is also superbly illustrated and includes a number of really detailed step-by-step painting projects. However many books you may already own, this one will make a really worthwhile addition to your library. Or if you’re starting with oils, this is a great buy. I should add that I also have the DVD, and the two items complement one another really well.

I love her loose style and in this book she gives the reader the tips and tricks of her fabulous technique. Inspiring how to’s from start to finish. I disagree with a previous review regarding the information on brushes etc. Surely the artists brushes are important in achieving the wonderful brushstrokes in her work and I was delighted she shared that information. Would highly recommend this book for any oil painter, at any stage of their journey as an artist.

This is the best art book I've ever read... it's packed with very useful tips and information. I actually think a lot of the chapters could apply to other mediums, for instance the chapters on drawing, composition, values, and colours. I found this book fascinating, and read it from cover to cover. Haidee-Jo has a very accessible style of writing, and explains things clearly and simply. I also loved seeing so many of her wonderful paintings in the book - they're so inspiring. I thoroughly recommend this book.
