Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Vibrations is a story with something of a familiar premise: a normal guy in a strange new surrounding, just wanting to get home. After that, though, the story is unlike anything else you have read. It's not cookie-cutter fantasy but a mixture of fantasy and science fiction, with a little bit of metaphysics thrown in. If you are tired of the same old story, check it out. Once you go to Gythe, you'll be hooked.

About the Author

A chemical engineer by degree, air quality engineer by vocation, certified dreamer by predilection, and writer by sheer persistence, P.E. Padilla learned long ago that crunching numbers and designing solutions was not enough to satisfy his creative urges. Weaned on classic science fiction and fantasy stories from authors as diverse as Heinlein, Tolkien, and Jordan, and affected by his love of role playing games such as Dungeons and Dragons (analog) and Final Fantasy (digital), he sometimes has trouble distinguishing reality from fantasy. While not ideal for a person who needs to function in modern society, it’s the perfect state of mind for a writer. He lives in Southern California.

Just when I think the bookstore is empty a good book is found. Nice story and take on the alternate world. The non-human companions were the most unique part of the story.

I was on the lookout for redundancy based on the other reviews, only one seemingly identical paragraph describing transport birds stuck out. There did seem to be a lag in the book. The ending took me by surprise which is a delight as it doesn't happen too often. Even better it was fair to the reader, not just thrown in out of the air, and satisfying.

Refreshingly for the genre this felt like a complete book, not just book one. I hope the author does continue the characters.

All in all, this is a good story with a magic system based on the science of vibrational energy from atoms. I appreciated the scientific basis and the connections discussed throughout. Meditation techniques and fighting strategies were also explained clearly as part of Sam's training.

The journey takes some time to get going, but along the way the reader gets a good feel for the characters and their growth. Settings and scenes are well-described and help the reader to envision what is taking place. There are some instances of repetitiveness and over-explanation, but not excessively so; it suggests the story is more geared for a 'new adult' audience, to coin a relatively new term in the industry.

There are some surprises and intrigue which keep the story moving along. Some things that surprise Sam don't necessarily surprise the reader, but it is still interesting to live with Sam's view on the world around him.

I enjoyed this story and would recommend it for those who like to grow and learn with the characters and are willing to partake in numerous training sessions with Sam and the rest of his group. The action picks up in the second half with a satisfying conclusion. I would pick up book two.

For the last year, I've been on a Fantasy kick and I'm coming to discover that I really enjoy fantastic works that incorporate our world, giving us something grounding and familiar, with a new and fantastic world. This is one of those books and it works very well. There's also a bit of science thrown in, giving it a sci-fantasy hybrid appeal.

The cast of characters is great. Everyone is fleshed out well, yet all have left me with enough questions that I am looking forward to finding out more about them and the world of Gythe in the next book. I'm especially interested in learning more about Dr. Walt and how he ended up transporting himself. Even Skitter, the highly evolved furry little friend of Sam's, has me curious to know more about his background and what his fellow citizens think of his adventures.

Like most epic fantasy, this is a pretty long read, but the pacing is done well. The world building is woven into the journey, allowing us to learn along with Sam about this strange new world that he seems to have meditated himself into. If I had to nitpick, there was one plot point (that I will not reveal due to spoilers) that I found predictable thanks to a certain Twilight Zone episode that uses the same twist.

Overall, this was a highly enjoyable and adventurous read that I'd recommend to all fantasy fans and those looking for something just slightly different from the same old epic journey.

The premise of this book made no sense. Sam is on a quest to figure out how to get home.
Just a chapter before he managed to transport himself and his home to an alternate world, and then back to his own. After several months’ pf research and preparations he manages to again transport himself and his house back to that same world, he then “forget” how to return? This made no sense to me except as a plot device to keep him in the alternate world. He doesn’t even try a second time to return home, he just assumes he can’t.
From this point on the rest of the plot seems unfulfilling. Too bad, it seemed like an interesting premise. Although the support characters seem very stuck-up and arrogant after having gotten their butt handed to them over and over by their enemy.

Positives

Believable Characters-- Check
Smart Magic System - Check
Decent World building- Check
Some Humor, characters don't take themselves to seriously- Check
Surprise resolution - Check
Enough bread crumbs that the surprise resolution is legit and makes sense- Check
An actual end- 2x Check
GREAT relationships, built up well based on character- 2x Check
Bad guys explained-

Negatives
3 characters had some powers (exploding hearts) that felt a bit overdone, then weren't used when it made sense to use them.
Few time ratio mistakes, for me character 35 years = 12 years. For another 6 months = MUCH less than that previously established ratio

Good book

What started as a seemingly promising exploration of concepts got swallowed in too many expositions, the characters are too busy explaining things to each other, and the story that devolves quickly from an epic adventure to 1990s inspired kung fu movies. Even the magic that was promising devolves into just a puny semblance of chi with a terrible lack of imagination. I'd say it's quite a waste of time.
