I purchased this product because the other external drive I previously had no longer worked with my iMac's OS X El Capitan. So this time I put a little bit of more money into a product that I was hoping would burn disc faster when I make DVDs.
This External DVD/CD writer definitely does burn discs faster then a 2.0 usb would. I've only had it for a week and have only had a chance to burn CD's but I can tell it's faster. So far it works with my OS, it works with burning discs, and it plays DVD's.
I don't think it's obnoxiously loud. I think the sound is just like any other burner in my opinion. So far so good and I'm happy with it.

Received as Christmas Gift! Works intermittingly in that my system sees it off and on -- timed for no more than 15 seconds at a time. Tried it with two other computers, HP All in One running W10 and an very old dynamite HP desktop running W7. Problem was the same, saw it for 15 seconds or so then lost it. I believe the problem is with the USB cable -- hard wired at the drive side. If I wiggle it the connection seems to activate for a second or two (the light on the front goes on). VicTsing does not offer any support I could run down so the product has to be returned. It not working upon receipt isn't that big a deal, really, but having no support AT ALL is not acceptable.

It's a nice portable drive. I seldom need a cd/dvd drive and our iMac and macbook air don't have one built in to them so this is perfect. I have a pc with a broken cd drive so I've used it on that one time too. half the $$'s of what Apple wanted to sell me, every bit as solidly built and I think faster reads too.

Started ripping all my CDs to a larger hard drive. I wanted the best fidelity so lossless in Itunes with error correction was the way to go. However using the build in drive for my laptop it barely achieved a 2x read speed. I noticed the CPU and disk was barely ticking over. Bought this to see if it helped and now I'm getting anywhere between 6x and 18x speeds - way faster.

Built in USB cord is kinda short - use an extender if that will be a problem. Apart from that works great.

It is rare for me to write a really horrible review but this product demanded it. Right out of the box, at first it wouldn't work at all. Then somehow I did get it to start working but the usb plug was very picky as to which connection it would permit the unit to function. The tray door often misaligned while gently closing so it showed that it was poorly designed as well.
For those who still wish to try this product out, resign yourself to getting a paperweight or a prime product for your local landfill.
I urge Amazon to remove this product from their catalogue
