Not a lot of pretty or sunshine in this book, even Pierce and Miles' tender moments have an incredibly hard edge. Rooting for them ensures that others will die, but what else can I do? I am a sucker for a hard hearted fella finding and fighting for love. Especially when help comes from so many unexpected sides.
I really can't end this review without showering Miles with tons of love, even when he is being a dumba$$ about Jayden. His heart is a perfect match to Pierce's, even when Pierce fights tooth and nail against their love match
2) The writing in this story was absolutely spectacular. Gritty, dark, grim - and just as it should have been. A story depicting a mob hit man wouldn't have been done right any other way. I expected violence and death, and that's exactly what the author delivered. I was surprised to see that there was also an M/M Romance in this as well, and it was executed brilliantly. The relationship started off as tenuous and seedy as the rest of the world building was. Mob crime isn't my type of reading, but the way the author ushered me into her world, the more I appreciated the 'gumshoe' aspects of it all. Exceptionally well done.
Nicholas Pierce is a mob enforcer and has worked for the Vice family for more than twenty years. In that time, he's proven his loyalty more times than he can count ... and seen and inflicted more violence than most men could endure. He's not sure why seeing young Miles Davenport being worked over for supposedly being a police informer gets to him, but get him he does and Pierce steps in, thus saving Miles's life. Pierce's motivation causes no small amount of distress ... his inner monologue is quite entertaining and vivid, that's for sure. His thoughts let the reader know he has his own way of looking at things, his own moral code he lives by in order to keep some part, no matter how small, of his humanity left.
As for Miles, he's in quite the mess. He joined the Vice mob to protect his brother, a brother that seems hell bent on disregarding the peril he continually puts himself and Miles in. Relying on Pierce for his safety isn't anything Miles is comfortable doing--he knows the kind of man Pierce is--but he can't help his attraction to the cold, brutal man. There are next to no tender moments between Miles and Pierce, this is by no means a romance, but there are feelings. Intense feelings and emotions that broil between these two the more time they spend together. In the midst of all this, Pierce and Miles have to stay ahead of the guys out to destroy the Vice family and in turn Pierce and Miles. There is a lot of double-cross and betrayal going on as would be typical in this kind of story and it was all so well written and intriguing. Lots of violence, too, but again, it's expected.
Vice City is not an easy read--there's not much hope or joy or light, but it IS compelling and the writing and pace are tight and on point. I found myself thoroughly engrossed in the story and couldn't wait to find out what happens next. There is plenty of violence, plenty of dark and heavy, but Pierce and Miles are just that captivating that you keep reading just to make sure they'll be okay. A lot of action, a lot of shooting and blood, it was like watching a movie play out in your head as you read along. The tension never lets up and by the end, you're kind of mesmerized and in a stupor ... which really, isn't that the mark of a great book? I'm really looking forward to what this author does next with this cast of gritty, brash, real characters. I highly recommend you pick up Vice City and see what I'm talking about.
