Kate is something of an idealist, but she is also very much a realist. Devastated by the effects that her father's lifelong gambling addiction has had on her family, she strives to help others in similar situations, encouraging them to stop letting the addict in their lives control every aspect of it with their addiction. She secretly finds it difficult to practice what she preaches, however, and in many ways is living a lie. This situation only gets worse when she meets Liam and their explosive attraction for one another pulls her further down a self-destructive rabbit hole.
Liam is a man who would seem to have it all, wealth, notoriety, and stunning good looks. Yet his personal life is a disaster that is only getting worse. Successful he may be, but his near-single-minded dedication to work and his businesses is slowly but surely driving him toward an early grave. After meeting Kate, the attraction he feels for her at first seems as though it might be what he needs, namely a distraction to pull him away from working too hard and killing himself with stress. However, just as it is for Kate, the intensity of their passion quickly proves to be a flame that threatens to consume them and is merely the trading of one obsession for another.
Addiction is very much the governing theme of this book, and Leo shows us the many different forms it can take and how even things that would normally be positives can be turned into destructive negatives if not handled properly. Love can save you or lead you into madness. The flames of passion may be thrilling, but take care lest they consume you. All of this is shown with a realism that makes the characters truly shine as real people and makes your heart break for them and the trials they have to fact, both external and internal. For they are both truly their own worst enemies through much of the story. But even as we are led through the darkest parts of love's underbelly, the light of hope is never quite extinguished. It is ever made clear that it is not too late for them to change, to stop their downward spiral and work to get their lives and relationships on a healthier footing. It won't be easy, and there will be setbacks, but change is ever possible if you want it badly enough.
I am really excited to see Rosanna Leo stretching her wings as a writer and exploring different themes and tones with her work. Though I adore her usual lighter, more playful style, I am also blown away by how masterfully she handles this darker, edgier style as well. I believe we will only continue to see better and better things from her and I for one can't wait. If gritty, contemporary romance is your thing, definitely give this one a try. You won't be disappointed. Then check out her other work and keep an eye out for what is yet to come.
Kate Callender, a singer and a leader in a gambling addiction group, is very likable and I really rooted for her. She takes her relationships seriously and even when life presses her down, she seems to surface gracefully. I was really intrigued, along with Kate, by THE Liam Doyle, casino owner, a rival to her heart held beliefs. I loved watching the fixation Liam had for Kate unfold. I laughed when he tried to figure out who she was as they began their entertaining banter. She turned his world upside down and he reacted like a cat being petted backwards but purring at the same time. Their chemistry was undeniable. No wonder they got lost in a painful binge of a different sort that would lead them to need more self-searching to find breakthroughs needed for a possible love match, happily ever after. There was so much heart in this book that their journey was very enjoyable. I didn’t want to put this book down and really could not figure how they would work it all out. But as with her other books, Rosanna does not disappoint and my questions were answered spectacularly!
Having grown up with a father who was addicted to gambling, a man who showed up only when he needed money, it’s no wonder Kate Callender has made it her personal mission to help others in the same situation. The problem is Kate can’t stop enabling her father’s gambling habit and despite her better judgment, caves to his wicked manipulations time and again. When Kate suddenly finds herself out of work, she decides to use her free time to protest against the guy who just opened a new casino, someone she blames for fostering such temptations, Liam Doyle.
Liam Doyle has spent a lifetime proving his worth by creating a gambling empire, building casino upon casino like a compulsion. But no manner of success has filled the void in his life until the moment he lays eyes on the sassy red head picketing outside Vice. One look and he’s hooked on Kate. Despite her angst and ultimate goal of shutting down the Vice grand opening, he can’t stop looking at her, dreaming about her, or wanting her in his bed, and she quickly becomes his obsession.
There’s so much to say about the characters Rosanna Leo has created. They’re funny, sexy and yes, challenged. Each of them had sad childhoods that left them damaged. Yet, they managed to rise above it all to gain professional success and still couldn’t dump their personal demons. As they wage war in and out of the bedroom, intimate details of their own lives emerge and they begin to see each other in a different light. Little by little, as haunted memories are shared, they cling to each other for emotional support. Having bared their souls and bodies, what starts out as a simple attraction soon turns into sexy obsession, another addition—this time to each other.
The emotional antics of these characters unfold between the sheets with steamy scenes and sexy encounters they use to escape the real issues that plague them. While the sex is romping good fun, one can’t help but cross their fingers and cheer for them to work out their problems, trust in each other and find a deeper connection.
Watching Kate and Liam’s lives develop on the page will leave the reader addicted to this story.
