I purchased this humidifier last week at Target because I was suffering from a cold. I had a dry cough, sinus congestion, and a runny nose. I wanted a warm mist because it is winter and I do not want a cool mist humidifier to make my room cold when I sleep.
I am a very light sleeper and the sound of the water boiling(low setting) is not whisper quiet in my opinion. I have it placed by my side of the bed so maybe if it were placed further away, such as the foot of the bed, it would be quieter. However I want the humidity to be concentrated near me while I sleep. The night light bothers me so I covered it with a few layers of blue painters tape. I have it placed on a large metal tray since the instructions say to place it on waterproof material. A full gallon lasts throughout the night on low setting so I don't have to worry about it shutting off in the middle of the night. It does not leak(so far) and am content with its performance other than the noise level for my sensitive ears. I have become more used to the noise in comparison to the first few nights. My boyfriend is a deep sleeper and has no issues with the sound.
We will continue to use it throughout winter and future winters however we will look into a cool mist humidifier for use during summers.
I've been using this for about 3-4 weeks now and luckily have had NO leaking issues. I use filtered water and I do leave it filled when it is not in use (for a few days even) and still, no leaking. Not sure if it's luck or I have a good one from a good batch! I'll keep updating if anything changes. I have also added a short video for others to hear the noise level of the humidifier on low setting.
Make sure you rinse the heating element off every couple of uses to prevent mineral buildup, and it'll last you years. Mine (bought in 2014) has some moderate buildup that I acquired during the first year of use that hasn't affected the performance in any way. The buildup was because this was my first humidifier and I had no idea you needed to clean them. Just do a quick rinse in your sink and you'll have a humidifier that'll last you years.
My house feels so much warmer, and my skin and hair very much appreciate the humidity. I also love the vick's VapoPads that you can put into the bottom of the machine, though they can get expensive. Try to catch them on amazon when they're a nice >$4 addon price and stock up then.
