Uncompromising flavor, yet suitable for heart healthy diets 5*
Your doctor or guru tells you to cut down on the salt. Sure, you can go out to the farmer's market (or fancy import store in winter) and bring back an armload of fresh plum tomatoes, basil and other ingredients, then spend the evening cooking up a splendid sauce (and maybe reading a bunch of recipes too;-). That's one way to control the sodium in your diet. But wouldn't it be nice to kick back occasionally and reach for a jar from the pantry, boil up a bit of pasta, maybe combine with a few veggies or leftover meats, and simply chow down?
But if you read those pesky little "nutrition facts" boxes, yikes, your half cup serving of pasta sauce will typically take up 18 -25% of your total daily allowance of 2500 mg (an even greater portion, obviously, if you're trying to stick to 1500 mg). Even at the fancy health-food store, the news on sodium just doesn't seem to have gotten out. You learn to make do with the occasional "somewhat less sodium" sauce on th grocery shelves (say 10-15%), maybe eventually find a genuinely low sodium sauce or two (Trader Joe's Organic Marinara Sauce, No Salt Added, isn't bad if you have a TJ's in the neighborhood).
But too often manufacturers just haven't adjusted to low sodium cooking even when they do try. They seem to think that people want low sodium because they don't like flavor or adventure. So it's refreshing to find a product that can be recommended not just for health but flavor, and Victoria Low Sodium Tomato Basil is one such. Unless you're on a severe sodium restriction, the 120 mg per serving should fit within your salt budget, but Victoria does not compromise on the quality either.Read more ›
