Format: Paperback
It's interesting that Victorian costumerie divides itself so neatly into "Early" (1837-69, with the bell-shaped skirt that widened gradually until it flowered in the extravagances of hoop skirts) and "Late" (1870-1901, the era of the elaborate bustle, more complicated hairstyles, hats instead of bonnets, and eventually the short-lived "princess" silhouette, the S-curve and the "hourglass" figure of the Gibson Girl). This collection, which should be used in conjunction with Early Victorian Costumes Paper Dolls (History of Costume), doesn't quite follow that division exactly (its first plate is from 1860-1) and for reasons unclear stops at 1898, but it's still a beautiful work of art with Tierney's signature detailed research and brilliant color. Good liner notes amplify the pictures.

High quality paper dolls. These are well-researched and colorful and bright. They are such a pleasure to look at and cut The paper dolls are a really wonderful way to help kids really visualize history

I have made permanent paper doll stands from railings available from places like Home Depot or Lowes). If you have access to a table saw you can cut a groove into the top of the rounded part of the railing. I have found that 2" to 2-1/2" in length is good. Stain & varnish if you like. These really help to keep the dolls standing up & makes actual play more fun for children.

It is what it says a paper doll book. If you're into fashions of the 1800's then this is a good book for you.

I bought this book for my mother and after looking through it when it arrived, I wish that I had a copy for myself too! The dolls are great and it's just a lot of fun.

The colors are too muted and the paper is flimsy. This is not on the same level as his GIBSON GIRLS. Illustrations
are super gorgeous though hence 4 stars.
