This combo is an excellent value for money. The knife is very portable (3-layers) and honestly all you would be missing are the scissors which can be substituted by either blade (large for long distances or small for better precision). If you don't need the wood saw (which would be a mistake), then consider the Super Tinker which has replaces the saw with scissors. If you must have both go for the 4-layer Fieldmaster or its equivalent (Huntsman Boy Scout) whichever is cheaper BUT know in advance you would be sacrificing portability.

Beware that many 5 and 4-star reviews on Swiss Army Knives seem to be planted by Victorinox themselves. I have now bought over 40 Victorinox knives so far and I love them all except one with cheap plastic scales ("Rucksack"). When I received it, I sincerely thought it was a Chinese replica but after some youtubing found it was indeed a genuine Victorinox but of lower quality so I returned it immediately. If you need a 111mm SAK go for the dual density plastic scales (e.g. the Hunter XT as it has its one-handed blade with straight edge not serrated. This is less painful (more merciful) for slaughtering animals for food NOT FOR LEISURE).

The best 91mm SAK is the Fieldmaster (same as Huntsman Boy Scout) and Explorer Boy Scout. Both are 4-layer knives containing most useful tools, but this Hiker is much more portable but without the scissors.

The Classic SAK (51mm) knives are so small that they are next to useless and are only good for key rings. A major design problem with the Classic is that the ring is on the wrong side so the knife opens near the keys and the toothpick/tweezers are more likely to fall off as they are at the bottom when you hang your keys.

I have ALWAYS carried a Swiss Army knife by Victorinox. I have had many different models that each served their purpose at the time. I always would complain that the slimmer models that were easy to carry, seemed to be missing the one item I needed at the time. The larger models that had all the tools I could possibly use, were a chore to carry in a pocket and became obtrusive when worn on the belt in its sheath.
The HIKER model has everything you need around the house or in the field. The Saw blade is a must when camping or spending an unplanned overnight-er in the woods. It does an incredible job cutting saplings and making tinder.
The Victorinox line of S.A. knives are all great and of the highest quality you can find in a pocket knife. The HIKER model is the one I ALWAYS have with me.

I've owned pocket knives from countless companies, and Victorinox has always stunned me with its level of quality and attention to detail. When I'm holding one of these knives, and opening and closing the tools, it feels satisfying and hefty (though not heavy) in a way that very few knives can match. These things last for decades, and that's why Victorinox puts a lifetime warranty on each of the 34,000 Swiss army knives they produce every day.

The sharpener is also really great for experienced outdoor enthusiasts. It's extremely lightweight and sharpens beautifully and easily, but should not be handled by kids or inexperienced sportsmen, because it's not a "safety sharpener." If you don't use caution you could easily slice open a finger. Every knife I've bought from Victorinox has been razor sharp right out of the box, though, so you shouldn't even need to use the sharpener right away (unless you have other knives in need). I lowered a thick sheet of paper into the blade of this particular knife as soon as I opened it, and it melted through like nothing was there.

This knife comes in a molded plastic package that has to be cut away and discarded. It doesn't include a fancy box like some of the really massive/expensive Swiss army knives do, but the quality of the knife itself is exactly equal to that of the other knives.

By the way: in Switzerland, products are government regulated; if a company wants to put the Swiss Cross on any item they produce, they have to undergo a rigorous series of tests to prove that the item in question is of the highest possible quality. Victorinox and Wenger are the only two knife companies in all of Switzerland that are allowed to put the Swiss Cross on their knives.

a super deal, but most of all, a super knife. a tool. i am both a wood carver and a whittler; this is for the whittler in me. the saw is wonderful; the two blades are just the two i need for whittling—the small one for most work, i keep a mare traditional bevel on the bigger blade, while the small blade is ground (by hand) thinner. great steel, great knife construction. awl is very useful, as is phillips screwdriver. worth twice the price.

Classic durability, quality steel with functionality & simplicity, blades & tools are solidly set to prevent accidental opening or closure (may take a little more effort to deploy the "tools"). I would prefer an all steel body but the tradeoff plastic makes the knife lighter & a little less costly. Can't beat the genuine Swiss Army knife. A good buy. It's never worth it to purchase a cheaper imitation that will rust, not hold its edge and fall apart.
