The tools are in a slightly awkward position when opened. It's not terrible, but they are all set back away from the edge of the handle a little more than you would expect. I am used to the good old "Classic" model, and on that you can press the flat part of your thumb against the scissor flipper and handle because it all roughly lines up. On the Tomo, the handle is raised up above the fully-depressed level for the scissors, so to completely chop down you actually have to press down with your thumb tip instead of the flat pad of your thumb, which is actually somewhat uncomfortable if you are using this in a pinch to cut anything more than a thread.
The knife is also slightly awkward to use (but not uncomfortable like the scissors) because the handle drops down below the cutting edge (on the Classic, the knife starts close to the handle edge and the slight angle actually makes it drop below).
The reason for all of that is because Victorinox did not build this knife as if it were its own design. They start with the frame of the Classic model (which is a slimmer handle with rounded ends) for efficiency, and the "new" handle is just a larger pair of plastic slabs molded to fit around the old frame (you can see the smaller oval liner on the inside). The result is a larger handle size with the tools pivoting at the same location which was ideal for the smaller handle, but inefficient for a larger handle. If the pivots were all closer to the handle corners, the tools would not only fold out into a more useful position, but the handle would be able to accommodate slightly larger tools within the same footprint.Read more ›
-The scissors, I only use them to cut thread and yarn so they've stayed crisp and sharp.
-The nail file is suprisingly handy, as I've used it to sand down nails and even some plastic bits that frayed on craft supplies.
-The knife is also sharp enough for cutting paper (I use this for class when I forget staples, I origami a little paper holding tab) but not super useful when cutting say, zip ties.
Over all, my favorite thing on my key ring. And it's bright!
