About Victorinox
In 1884, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener set up shop in Ibach-Schwyz, installing a waterwheel in Tobelbach Brook to run his grinding and polishing machines. Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox, a combination of Victoria, for Elsener's mother, and "inox," or stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing, and, famously, Swiss Army Knives. The original product dates to 1897, when Elsener patented the Swiss Officer's and Sports Knife he supplied to the Swiss Army. Following World War II, American servicemen and women shopping in PX stores shortened the name to Swiss Army Knife, which lives on in English-speaking countries around the world and has become a metaphor for versatility.

I have a Victorinox SwissChamp. I have a Leatherman Wave. I carry a Victorinox Pioneer. From cutting up BBQ to drilling holes in lumber, this handsome knife is up for whatever- whenever. Many people don't realize that the small slotted screwdriver blade on the tip of the can opener will also work with Phillips screws. I posted some pics so you can see this beauty in action. The quality of this knife is simply astounding at the sub $30 price point. If you want a simple, lightweight EDC blade with a compliment of tools to cover a wide spread of fundamental tasks, the Pioneer should definitely be on your radar. If scissors are important to you, consider getting a matching Victorinox Classic Alox to complete your loadout.

The Pioneer deserves its reputation as a classic.

Form factor: It's small and light enough to carry comfortably in a pants pocket. Can't say that about my multi-tool.

Durability: The blade and tools are sturdy and well made, and the alox handle seems indestructible.

The blade: First and foremost, a knife is a blade, not a pliers, screwdriver, or can opener. This blade is sharp, sturdy, and sizable enough to actually do useful work. Try slicing an apple with a cutesy little 1.5" blade on a mini-multitool.

The tools: Just what you need, and nothing you don't. The awl, bottle opener and can opener are well-designed and surprisingly effective. I'm continually amazed at the amount of chores that I can handle with just the four tools on this knife.

There are knives that look cooler and have more gee-whiz features. But for day to day utility, the Pioneer is damn near perfect.

The Pioneer is basically a Victorinox Soldier model, with the addition of a keyring. It provides the can opener/screwdriver, large flathead screwdriver/bottle opener/prybar, reamer, and large blade. The alox-handle knives like this one have stronger backsprings and thicker tools than the cellidor-handle models. The reamer is semi-sharpened and very effective. Nice sturdy, thin knife.

I have carried a Pioneer for 35 years. It differs from the current model in two respects. The alox scales were anodized red and the cut liner is brass, not aluminum. Over the years the red has worn off except in the checkering grooves and where it is protected by the awl. The blade takes a good edge and holds it well. Maintenance with a few strokes on a professional steel is all it usually takes to keep it sharp enough to win the occasional bar bet. All of the tools have seen extensive use and show little wear save minor scuffing. Despite the years of use, the joints are tight. A little oil from time to time helps flush out any pocket grit which would cause excess wear.
I can recommend wholeheartedly the Victorinox Pioneer, with the caveat that only years of use will tell if the current production knives are as good as those of the past.

I've carried Victorinox knives since my teenage years, and that was twenty-five years ago. Started with the monstrous "Champ" 70+ function knife, which rode in a belt pouch and was WAY more than anyone needs for daily carry and use, but it did let me try out most of the functions and find which were my bare necessities.

I've gone through two or three since then, all of a similar size to the Pioneer, and my only issue I've ever had has been the eventual loosening of the trademark red scales. I probably should have investigated warranty replacement, but each time the handle scales came loose I decided to try a slightly different model. With the Alox scales, this one looks to be a lifetime purchase.

The Alox Pioneer does away with the tweezers and toothpick of the red plastic handle versions. I won't miss either of these. The tweezers might have worked to remove the occasional splinter, but for most other fine work they were not, in my opinion, worth the effort of inclusion. The toothpick, after riding in a pocket and collecting whatever gunk the knife was near, could not be a sanitary option for its purpose! The only reason I wouldn't trash these two items out of hand was the unsightly holes left without them.

The blade is typical Victorinox - SHARP out of the box! I mean arm-hair-shaving sharp! I will likely get more use out of the reamer blade than the small blade my other knives offered. And the cap lifter and can opener are old friends - with large and small flathead screwdrivers (and the small can do a good job on most normal-sized Phillips-head screws!) I could, honestly, take or leave the key ring, but it's there.

The aluminum handles look good even with wear, and there's nothing on the knife to fall apart (unlike the red plastic SA knives). The high-polish stainless steel blade is easy to sharpen to a shaving edge, although it does require more frequent re-sharpening than a Buck knife for example. The design is clean and sleek and it fits nicely in a front pocket.

What a classic. One of the most recognized Swiss Army Knives, and for good reason.

• Standard amazing build quality of Victorinox, just as expected. No rattle, smooth operation, built to last.
• Mirror polish stainless steel. These things just don't rust. I've carried a Huntsman for twelve years. Not even a hint of rust on it.
• Alox scales. Much more durable that the standard cellidor scales.
• Thickness. It is thinner than most models, due to it being only two layers, and the scales being aluminum. It is very comfortable to hold, and you do not feel it in your pocket.
• Tool selection. For such a thin profile, it has many tools. All perfectly engineered, they open smoothly, and snap in place with authority. In-line awl, shaving sharp blade, beefy can opener and cap lifter. The can opener's driver tip fits Philips screws.

Note: If you need scissors, this should obviously not be your first choice.
There are some variations of this model, mainly replacing the can-opener with an electrician's blade or pruning blade, and adding a saw in the middle. All are of the same excellent quality, it's up to you to decide on the tool selection that best suits your needs.

The blade and cap lifter are a bit larger on these, compared to 91mm models.
