This is the pocket knife I carry when travelling. You have what you need. It is thin, ligh. You have a blade for peeling and cut a fruit. A corkscrew for that special wine you will have in your room at a discounted price. Sometimes I use the cap opener and as far as I can remember I have used once the can opener. In other words do not go for those mini or maxi pocket knife, have your "waiter" with you!

OK, I won't totally commit to saying the Waiter is the absolute *best* SAK, but it's certainly in the running.

(I don't comment on the quality of SAKs; others cover that; I just talk about what's good -- or not so good -- about particular models)

If the Galactic Overlords decreed we could only have one SAK and had to use it all the time, I could be happy with any of these: Spartan, Compact, Camper, Climber Plus, Huntsman, Farmer, Waiter, Rambler, or Manager.

Thinking specifically about the Waiter:

I hate the name. Waiter. I have nothing against waiters (they bring me food and drink for low pay... I wish they got paid more), but such a lousy name for this knife.

It should be called either the Thru-Hiker or the Ultralight.

It's the perfect knife for a long-distance thru-hiker or ultra-light backpacker. Its blade is big enough to do actual work, but it's ultra light. It opens packages, bottles. and cans; it unties knots; it cuts stuff that needs cut; its screwdriver can fix a pack or tune a stove: everything a backpacker or thru-hiker needs. It's also terrific for around town and at the office. It's a great low-key gentleman's folder. Very nonthreatening even for hoplophobiacs.

The corkscrew is very good at untying stubborn knots in paracord. This is important. If you hike, if you camp, you know this. (It also opens wine bottles; easy way to be a hero.)

Can-opener, bottle-opener, wine-bottle-opener... This is important too. At some point -- whether you're a thru-hiker or just a civilian -- you're going to need one of these.

The Waiter (Thru-hiker, Ultra-light) has a screwdriver... it can fix a pack or stove. With attention, the multi-tool blade will handle a Phillips screw.

Over the years I have owned a small number of pocket knives - maybe 6-8 - and I had been looking at several different Victorinox knives for my next purchase. They have always been great quality, well made, and long lasting. The reason for my purchase is that I wanted one that was a true everyday pocket knife. It had to have a substantial enough blade, but light enough to carry in my pocket without weighing it down or bulging.

After many hours on Amazon, I found the Waiter - and I am glad I did. My requirements were met with this knife. When closed, it measures 3.25 inches long, and 3/8 inch thick. The blade is approximately 2.5 inches in length with a little over 2 inches of cutting edge (if that makes sense). While some folks complain about the useless nature of the corkscrew, having one is essential to me as my wife and I enjoy a nice bottle of wine frequently.

Overall this is a fantastic knife at a bargain price. I like it so much I ordered another 2 weeks later, so I will always have one around even if I misplace the original (or if someone "borrows" it and forgets to return it).

Cheers! Here's to the Waiter by Victorinox - you will not be disappointed!

there is nothing worse, than the sound of the five o'clock whistle; having a cold bottle of wine, and no cork-screw..... now I have a bottle opener ready at all times.... just remember to put it into you 'checked" luggage when you fly on a plane or security will keep it

In my opinion this knife is better than carrying the smaller classic keychain knife. I like having access to a larger blade and full size swiss army tools for everyday tasks without the expense of pocket space. The profile is slim and you can hardly even tell you have it with you, highly recommend for anyone who is looking for a simple every day carry knife.

This knife is perfect in terms of sleekness (no bulge knife cutting into your pants) and just having the few tools I most commonly need. I use the knife, corkscrew and bottle opener all the time when camping, and the tweezers are surprisingly handy too.

I actually got this version for my bar. Everything you need for a bar actually. I have been using Swiss army for my whole life and haven't had to many problems. I will say the red plastic doesn't seem as tough as I am seeing on the older models. Cost savings plastic?

I am at a farm at least one day a week, and you can't work around a farm without a pocket knife. This is one of the best. Parts move smoothly, it doesn't have all the extra stuff I don't need. It DOES have a bottle opener, which is great for coke in a bottle (I've rediscovered coke in glass bottles).
