In 1884, Master Cutler Karl Elsener opened a cutlery shop in Ibach, Switzerland. There, he and the cutlers’ union he formed produced the finest steel cutlery, finished with the now-famous proprietary edge preferred globally by professional and home cooks. In 1891, Karl supplied the Swiss Army with its standard issue Soldier’s Knife and in 1897 with the Officer’s Knife. In 1921, after the death of his mother, Victoria, and with the advent of stainless steel, then known as “inoxydable" and used in the production of his cutlery, Karl changed the name of the company to Victorinox. It is from those humble beginnings that a worldwide icon was born.Today, Victorinox is still owned and operated by the Elsener family, and both the company and family still resides in the small village of Ibach, Switzerland. Care Tips for Swiss Army KnivesThe various tools are manufactured from high-quality steel with precisely tuned features that are essential for the particular application. The steel is tempered, annealed and polished to achieve the necessary hardness and provide optimum resistance to corrosion.SharpeningTo re-sharpen your knife, use a whetstone at an angle of 15°– 20°. This will result in a cutting angle of 30°– 40°. If sharpening on a grinding wheel, always cool with plenty of water to avoid excessive temperatures and the resulting damages that may occur.CleaningAfter you’ve used your Swiss Army Knife for all of its various applications, such as cutting open numerous boxes, you may notice that the blades begin to stick together. Opening and closing the blades in warm water several times will allow the tools to easily move again. Once they have dried, it is recommended, to apply a small drop of oil between the blade or tool shank and the spring. To optimally maintain the locking mechanism, periodically apply a drop of our recommended Swiss Army Knife Oil. Never put Swiss Army Knives in the dishwasher.

It is perfectly aligned, buttery smooth, nicer than my Leatherman Rebar, and yes, bigger and heavier. The tools come out on the outside, and lock with a satisfying "snick." The release is easier to use than the Leatherman Rebar. Which itself is a nice tool, I carry that in my daily work messenger bag.
Update: I have received a Leatherman Wave, the new one, and would like to add that while the Wave has some very nice features. While the Victorinox Swisstool can be hard to extract tools with the nail nick with short nails, the Leatherman Wave has little raised humps you can dig into and pull out. The tools "clump" which lets you get them all out at once. Unlike the Victorinox Swisstool, however, the Leatherman Wave has the two blades, smooth and serrated, along with the saw and file, on the outside of the handle, all other tools are in the inside. The inside tools have the traditional Leatherman locking mechanism, while the outside blades and file and saw have liner locks. If you need a swift-deploying, one hand opening, knife then the Leatherman Wave is for you. However, unlike the Rebar or the Swisstool, the phillips driver is very small, you will need to get the Leatherman extension which can drop out of the pouch if you are not careful. The Rebar will take the Leatherman bit kit that works with the Supertool 300, but the bits are flat, "two dimensional" which makes them squashed, and easy to fit in a pouch (because they are squashed) but not so nice to actually use. Both the Rebar driver kit and the Leatherman Wave bit kit move around when in the driver.
The Swisstool can opener is far better and easier to use than the Leatherman, and so is the bottle opener. In the Leatherman they are combined and neither works well.
The Leatherman Wave and Rebar pliers open a few centimeters more, about maybe half an inch, than the Swisstool.
You CAN buy from Victorinox here on Amazon the extended pouch, and bit kit for your Victorinox Swisstool. You can also buy separately the corkscrew and glasses screwdriver that goes in the corkscrew. So if you really want the serrated blade you don't have to get the CS Plus (basically the Swisstool X plus the pouches).
Having used the Swisstool for a while, the serrated blade is great for breaking down boxes and also opening plastic packages. Sharper and easier to use than a smooth blade.
The pliers are strong and super easy. One nice touch -- the ruler, inches/centimeters, is far easier to read than the Leatherman. The result I think of the brightly polished steel.
I've had one of these before and absolutely loved it!!! I lost it, so this is the replacement. As far as the tool itself, it is, without a doubt the single most useful item I own! The knife appears to be the same quality...which is top-drawer, but the pouch they send with is dang-near useless! The one I got would not stay snapped! Great way to loose an expensive belt tool. But....am I repeating myself here???....the pouch is a letdown for the price! I will probably try to replace the snap...which is the real culprit...with a better one...that is, BEFORE I LOSE THE THING!
5 STARS FOR THE KNIFE!!! NOT EVEN A TWINKLE FOR THE POUCH!
This tool is bullet proof, but that means it's a little heavier than some of the other multi-tools. The implements on the tool stand up to regular use and abuse. Definitely the Cadillac of multitools at a reasonable price

A few years ago I started to give these tools away as presents for very good friends. Everybody who received this special present agrees: they never had a better and more reliable multi tool.
