The Mulit is a *very* impressive device. I've had two converter / chargers die in the last year. One took out other stuff when it went. I expect better reliability from the Multi. That said, the first one I got came in damaged. There's a really big transformer in the unit and that had pushed out the front panel. It's well worth the time to take a careful look at the unit when it arrives.
The Multi will mount either vertical or horizontal. In my case it's mounted horizontal. The top (looking at it vertically ... yes that's confusing ...) is only there to keep things out of the fans. Since the fans are protected with screens, I elected to remove it. That makes the unit a fraction of an inch smaller. It also should improve airflow. In my mounting location, there is no benefit to the protection provided by top cap.
To fully program the unit, you will need the magic Victron USB to VE.Bus dongle and a Windows PC. You very much *do* want to keep the firmware up to date. If you have (as I do) lithium batteries, you probably want to modify the charge profiles and voltages. Some of the settings are only accessible via USB. Yes, that's another $50 ( or you need to borrow one).
The Multi can be networked to a Venus GX via the same port you program it through. A very standard RJ-45 "ethernet" cable will connect the two devices. The temperature sensor that comes with the Multi works fine attached to the Venus. There are a number of integration features that only operate with something like the Venus hooking everything together.
Hooking up was pretty simple. 2/0 cable is recommended. The unit has a fuse on the output. Normal recommendations are that a DC fuse go at the battery as well. A breaker or fuse is needed on the input to the AC side and a second one is needed on the AC output. With a 50A transfer switch, there may be multiple output breakers. You also will need an isolated neutral on the output side. None of this is unique to the Multi.
The unit is not light weight. It needs a sturdy mounting surface. If it's in a boat or an RV consider just how much shock / vibration there will be in your situation. You may need to reenforce things a bit to support the weight. Weight is what you get when things are built right.
Having gone through a couple of devices, I noticed something odd when I hooked up the Multi. It's rated to put out 80A and you can set it up via USB to put out 80A. Hook it up to the batteries and *surprise* it puts out 80A. That should not seem weird. The gotcha is that both of the previous devices ( not made by Victron) only put out about 1/2 their rated current when the battery was a couple volts low. Indeed the default setting on the Victron is a bit lower, but still way above 40A.
On the inverter side, be careful about ratings. This is no different than a UPS. It's got a number of output parameters. Be sure they match up with what you need to do. It will do 4KW for a short while. It will do 1.6KW for a long time ( provided there is cool air and enough battery). The 4KW will pull up around 350 to 400A off your batteries. That will only happen if your wiring ( likely larger than 2/0) and batteries will support that kind of current. If you are running lithium's check the specs on the BMS to see what the current limits are.
It's a 5 star product except for the way Victron packages it. The idea is that the package absorbs a shock and maybe gets damaged rather than the packaging coming through in perfect shape with the item damaged ..... thus one star knocked off. Yes, Amazon was great as always with the return. I still had to haul this monster over to UPS .... All that pushed the project back about a week.

Given the price I would think a built in USB connection for configuration on a computer would be a given, but you have to buy an overpriced dongle and an ethernet cable, so consider that as part of the cost, especially if you have LiFePO4 batteries.
You can also get a bluetooth dongle, which also needs an ethernet cable, but only for monitoring (and changing mode) right now, and I've not found a way to add it to my BT network of victron devices. If it could join then it would be able to exchange info (like temperature and voltage) with other victron devices such as the battery monitor and solar charge controller.
UPDATE
You will very likely need to buy the Bluetooth dongle (as well as the USB dongle for setup) if you buy this.
For some reason Victron did not include a voltage sense connector in this model, which caused mine to read 0.6v below the actual battery voltage. The BT module has a terminal block with v-sense, and hooking that up seems to fix this voltage issue - or at least the VictronConnect app now reports the right voltage. Even with this though, an inverter load of just ~850W, with v-sense reporting 13.4v, ~250W coming in from solar and 99% SOC reported by the battery monitor, the MultiPlus gives a low battery warning. I'm still waiting for some kind of explanation from the distributor/Victron on what may be the cause of this.
Today, for no apparent reason and after 5 days of only annoying low battery warnings, the alarm light came on on the front panel when I switched the inverter on and no power flowed. I switched off the AC main breaker and tried to turn it on multiple times, but still no 120v. Eventually cycling DC power from the battery got it working again, so likely this was a firmware bug, but it doesn't improve my confidence in the product any!
UPDATE #2 - the MultiPlus is now working very well. The seller made contact with Victron and between us we figured out the solution - setting the cutoff voltage and alarm voltage lever much lower (10.x volts instead of 12.x v) got rid of the alarms and I've had no more issues with the inverter failing to turn on. My other complaints above remain, but once it works it's a pretty solid piece of equipment. One day I'll get to try out the charger side of this...
