I bought this book as a tribute to Julian Assange, unlawfully arrested today at the orders of the US government that forced the Ecuadorian authorities to set a dangerous precedent of breaching the political asylum rights.

The late Gore Vidal was a keen observer of the human condition - especially in politics. This collection of essays give great insight into our current state of political affairs.

Written by a true American original this is full of of a contrarians insight to why we are living under a security state today that has been decades in the making. Should be a must read to any American concerned with the future of our republic.

Yep, I bought it because of Assange too. It is transcripts of interviews Vidal did @2004 with the ‘Real News’ editor in chief, so there is a lot of repetition between chapters, but it’s still sobering. No mentions of European Union or Zionist World Domination, much more on how every nations economy is run on military spending, and has been since the end of WWII. Why we have not obliterated the planet is pure happenstance. On a personal note: Why the worry over global warming when We don’t give two cents for the Fukushima Disaster, glow in the dark Much?

Condition of book was perfect. Wish i had known most if not all of the book is just transcript of his public and available interviews. But its nice to have.
I bought this book because Assange was holding it during his arrest. As far as i can tell theres no big secrets here- Gore Vidal is a far left political commentator. About half of what he says is spot on, the other half is unsubstantiated leftist bias, much of which is demonstrably false. Nevertheless, he does have a unique and interesting insight into mamy figures and events from history because of his fathers positions.

Vidal always demonstrates a knowledge and mastery of history which he brings into focus with always-convincing eloquence. His disdain for the fools who call themselves political leaders is somehow always coupled with a melancholic resignation to the fact that the world could be a more peaceful place were it not for the National Security State.

Liked the aspect of being informative on so many topics, which kept my interest from the first page until the last.

A rant from the elderly Gore Vidal is better than no rant at all--but his message is much better delivered in titles he wrote previously.

Media is integral to US national security, they're part of the govt.

Vidal explains and informs as if this knowledge was common sense and therefore should be known by everyone. The automatic depth of understanding is impressive so it's a small book full of information about modern American oligarchy backed by 'brass check (cheque)' journalism.

A good read from a man who doesn't mince his words.

I am a fan of Gore Vidal and enjoyed his insight mainly on American politics. I would say that although the gentleman has pretty much got the US taped for the disastrous state it's in he is just a bit naive in some of his views as to the severe extent of the rot present in American society/politics...or maybe he's not.

This is one of my very favorite books. The discussion in these interviews with Gore Vidal are of great interest and easy to associate to the present situation the US and other countries find themselves in. A gorgeous easy quick read well worth engaging with.

Gore Vidal, shares an insider's and objective view to historical American events, with facts that show that we have made very little progress.

An insider's view of what is wrong with America!

The world is a sadder place since Vidal's passing...what he would have made of the politics in his beloved country, today - and the world - would make interesting reading. Sadly, he would be, of course, reviled if not ignored.
