Product Description

Vidal Sassoon is more than just a hairdresser - he's a rock star, an artist, a craftsman who changed the world with a pair of scissors. With the geometric, Bauhaus-inspired hairdos he pioneered in the 1960s and his wash and wear philosophy that liberated generations of women from the tyranny of the salon, Sassoon revolutionized the art of hairstyling and left an indelible mark on popular culture. This documentary traces with visual gusto the life of a self-made man whose passion and perseverance took him from an orphanage in London to the absolute pinnacle of his craft.

Dedicated to Vidal Sassoon, beloved, obit. 9 May, 2012.

VIDAL SASSOON: THE MOVIE (originally THE MAN WHO CHANGED THE WORLD WITH A PAIR OF SCISSORS, 2011, 95 minutes).

There are few, if any other, people whose mere name can evoke not just an era but an intimate, major portion of one's life like Vidal Sassoon. (Remember in Rosemary's Baby when Mia Farrow says Sassoon did her hair? They actually brought him in to do her hair especially for this and it's the first time anyone ever did a thing like that, devoting a special mention to Sassoon.)

When I was nothing more than a two-bit artist with a comic book style, Vidal Sassoon made me not only feel as if I could look good: he made me think I could cut hair! His famous commercials may very well be the most immediately recognizable in history because of the music and the saying: "If you don't look good, we don't look good!"

This delightful homage documentary allows Vidal to tell his own story, in his own words with that voice I have always loved almost as much as I love Bach: that rich, deep, soft, velvety and sparkly voice that defied bass or baritone. Here, we learn all about Vidal Sassoon, from his childhood in a Jewish orphanage in London to his success as a beginner hairdresser - all the way to the literal creation of new style, new fashion and of course new hair styles.

He would go on, of course, to set up Vidal Sassoon salons, schools and revolutionize even the way hair styling, products and salons were advertized. He would star on TV as many times as any great star, and hosted his own show for about 300 episodes.

But there is something absolutely fascinating about this movie. I've seen it twice already and keep going back to replay various bits. I first found it on Netflix, but their license expired and I was left wanting to see it again. When I found it on Amazon VOD for $10, I couldn't resist. Great little documentary for anyone interested in hair styling trends or even just a great underdog story.

I purchased this as a gift for someone who is a hairdresser obsessed with Vidal Sassoon. It is a bit disappointing that Amazon is apparently selling the Canadian(?) version of the DVD with cover art that is unattractive and, frankly, amateur looking, and not the cover art that is shown on their own website.

Whereas this is not a reflection of the movie, I am writing this review to let people know that Amazon isn't selling exactly what is advertised. Yes, people will be annoyed that I am giving a bad review since it doesn't reflect the content of the movie, but Amazon doesn't allow for an "Amazon's representation of this product" review, and until they do, I will leave reviews in the product category so that people will know what they are getting.

How hard is it to just put up a picture of the actual product? I couldn't even find the actual cover art for the DVD that I received anywhere online so that I could post a link to it. To be honest, the packaging seems so flimsy and so amateur, it looks like a bootleg.

I really enjoyed this bio about Vidal Sassoon. It was very well done. Particularly enjoyed the many interviews with Vidal, sadly shortly before his death.

His name, styles, products were EVERYWHERE, when I was growing up. "If you don't look good, we don't look good" was a catchy phrase we heard again and again.

Along with Mary Quant, the Beatles, Twiggy...Vidal Sassoon was a name forever tied to "the swinging sixties". Even now, watching this film, I thought the clothes, hairstyles...from that era were just amazing!

If you enjoy bios about modern-day icons of style, check this one out.

I love this movie and as a previous employee and student, this is the excitement and intensity we had in the salons. Anytime I have a really bad day, I will pop the movie and the positive message of Vidal's life really kicks me in the rear and into gear. Sounds flaky but it's all true. Fantastic movie.

I read Vidal's biograpghy which has so much more detail, the movie covers his life , if you are not a hairdresser I'm not sure you would find it interesting, I loved the history of hairdressing and how the present salon came to be. As a hairdresser I loved this and will treasure his story.

I"m a new stylist and while learning, one hears the name Vidal Sassoon qite a bit. It was great to get a deeper perspective on Vidal's history and on the development of his drive, passion, art and buisness sense. It explains why he is referred to as an "Icon", "Industry Leader" "Visionary".
