About the Author

Barbara London is a writer, curator, and longstanding interpreter of video, performance, media, installation, and sound art. She founded the video exhibition and collection programs at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, where she worked between 1973 and 2013. London was also the first to integrate the Internet into her curatorial practice. She is adjunct professor in the Yale Graduate Department of Fine Art and a consultant with the Kadist Foundation.

Great for people who want a biography of Barbra London! For people who want a history of video art (which is very much needed) you might want to wait till a more comprehensive history is written.

The good news is that this book raised many thoughts and questions in my mind about video art. The bad news is that it did little to answer these questions.

Barbara London was the curator of video art for the Museum of Modern Art. The books covers the period from when artists only had access to the most rudimentary of video tools to the present when artists have easy access to sophisticated cameras and editing tools. She considers video from single channel to installations. London discusses dozens of the artists who participated in video art and the dates of exhibitions and activities. Some of these discussions are quite lengthy but sound more like resumes and artist statements then any kind of analysis. In some ways this is also a memoir but the many of the mentions of London's activities are trivial. How does it help to understand the art that London ate a $5 lunch in Tokyo?

It would have been useful to understand exactly what London means by video art. She notes she is discussing a time based art like music and plays. However as near as I could tell the distinction between video art and feature movies and commercial television was that video art was made by a single person or a small group. In the early days it seemed to be mostly the recording of performance art, although some of the more recent video art, which now is called media art, includes landscapes, cartoons, dramatizations and so forth.

Concentrating on the use of video cameras seemed much like distinguishing paintings created with a brush from those created with a pallet knife. That might be useful if the distinction showed how the technique led to an insight into the workings of the content. Considering video as art is confusing the medium with the message.

The material is quite dense and after reading it a while, it becomes difficult to distinguish one artist from another. Adding to the difficulty is the fact that the book is printed in a sans serif, 5 or 6 point, type, and the index and notes are tinier. The writing style is pedantic.

This book cried for an appropriate technology. As I read about a particular video, I wished that I could see it, and occasionally I stopped reading, went to my computer, did an internet search and found the video. (Often I couldn’t!). An on-line book with links to the appropriate video would have been so useful.

Perhaps you might want to keep this book available as a reference for a particular artist. Otherwise I can’t recommend it.

A escrita de London é idiossincrática no sentido de abarcar trabalhos de videoarte de importante significado, os quais ela elencam com sua relação pelo Departamento de Videoarte do MoMA o qual ela fundou e trabalhou por 40 anos. Nesse sentido a escrita é sedimentada mais a partir desse contexto, e menos em um texto historicista que busca abarcar a história da mídia em espectro amplo. Deveria ter um subtítulo, ou um titulo mais específico. Video Art é demasiado pretencioso.
