Self Improvement: This series opens up with a story that doesn’t (for once) include mind manipulation, memory boxes, and the like. Now, with Jexie Regan, Vienna’s career is defined as a freelance security expert and they’re hired to bring the inventor of the Good Day formula and the formula itself on an undersea base on a planet guarded by killer robots.
The lab is a bit of a Brave, New World situation where humans are bred to be lab specimens for medical trials and copies are made of trial recipients. This gives a good opportunity to flesh out Vienna and Jexie’s moral compass as they are far more upset about the ethical implications than the scientist and clones involved.
Big Society: The Best Vienna story so far finds Vienna and Jexie trying to get the Good Day formula to Jonas Hall on a boom planet gone bust where the wealthy have become destitute and their homes with Sentient AIs are left to fend for themselves and many of the building make a living by killing.
As a concept, this could have easily devolved into camp silliness, particularly with the satirical elements. Instead, it's a near perfect story. The story has it's funny moments (with building talking and walking around) but it never detracts from the story. In addition, the satire is well-aimed as it cleverly lampoons the Apprentice, corporate greed, and consumerism without ever being preachy.
Impossibly Glamourous: Vienna goes into the belly of the beast-undercover inside Helping Hands Incorporated in her quest to fulfill her obligation to her client.
The story manages to keep us guessing with several fairly clever twists about her mission, corporate CEO Kensignton Fox, and who they can trust. It's not quite as a good as the prior two episodes, but the story reaches a satisfying conclusion and leaves me wanting more adventures with Vienna and Jexie.
Overall, I like this new format and hope that Big Finish continues with this teaming. I think Jexie balances Vienna quite nicely.
I'm at quite a loss as to how to describe my reactions to this latest series of adventures by our favorite assassin for hire with the heart of gold Vienna Salvatori. It seems that the plot line set up in Series Two was cast aside and Vienna now has a partner to help her carry out her missions - Jexi Reagan, a former/retired police officer, with a New York City accent.
It's usually never a good idea to reset a series in mid-stream. Yet it was done here without really any back story.
"Vienna - Series 3" consists of the interlocking episodes "Self Improvement," "Big Society," and "Impossibly Glamorous" all centering around the discovery by Vienna's and Jexi's client Doctor Ludovic Glospan of a medicine that brings out the best in people. Vienna and Jexie had been hired to protect him; but the good doctor is killed; and Vienna and Jexie are determined to bring his medicine to the galaxy at large.
Not a great entry in the Vienna series. While I hope that there will be a Series 4, I do not see it forthcoming on Big Finish's upcoming release schedule. Time will tell.
Hopefully Vienna will get an epic series worthy of her character.
