We've been running this projector for a week now. For the price - couldn't be happier! This is our 3rd home theater projector. 1st was an Infocus IN72 (480), second was the Mits HC1500 (720). After 4 years the 1500 was beginning to have issues, plus was due for its 3rd bulb replacement, so decided to upgrade to 1080. Researched the 8200 at Projectorcentral.com and Projectorreviews.com ... Both sites gave it a positive review and said that it was a good buy. Projectorreviews gave it a "Hot Product" rating.

This thing is a light cannon. Super bright. Running it in Eco mode is fine even in a room that has ambient light. Blu Ray and HD-DVD performance is stunning. Awsome image clairity and sharpness. Rich, bright colors, good contrast and shadows. Coupled with the bright image the picture is very, very vibrant. My standard DVD player is an Oppo-981HD... Had to do some tweaking to get an acceptable image for upscaling to 1080... But, once there, all's good.

Cons - The projector does need calibration... Projectorreviews.com has a detail of the suggested adjustments. Basically it's just tweaking of the R/G/B settings and the Brightness and Contrast settings. Downside - every time you power on the projector the R/G/B settings return to factory defaults so you have to go into menu and reset. That's a pain in the a$$ but, allowing for the projector's strong points, the 1-minute that takes is worth it. Other issue is placement. It has a high throw angle. The lens center line has to be about 13" below the bottom of the screen image. It has a vertical keystone adjustment but doesn't have a horizontal keystone adjustment so it will have to be pretty well centered on your screen.

Aside from performance, add in the 3-year warranty on the projector and a 1-year warranty on the lamp, plus the rated lamp life (4000 hrs in bright and 6000 hrs in Eco) and, at this price, this projector is an incredible value purchase.

This is the first projector I have ever purchased. I did a lot of research and I did see that people were saying that this projector's blacks were not the best. However, there were no REALLY bad reviews. Many people loved the projector and it does have DarkChip3 technology. The final selling point was the price. It was about $300 less than the next step up.

First, a little setup:
We are showing it on an Elite Sable CineWhite 110" screen with the projector mounted at the optimum location according to ViewSonic on the ceiling.
It is in a dedicated home theater so the room has no light leakage into it from windows or doors at night.

Initially I was impressed by this projector. It was watchable even with the lights on although a little faded. We got it just before Thanksgiving and football on TDAY on this project was INCREDIBLE. Absolutely loved it and we had a fantastic time watching the games.

The first movie test was Avatar on Blu-RAY. The colors REALLY look vibrant on this projector. However, the next Blu-Ray we tried was Brave. About 60% of this movie is set in a dark forest or a dark castle scene. The blacks were so bad that you could not make out the body of most people, animals, scenery, etc.

There are a ton of movies such as Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings which have plenty of dark scenes. What I found very quickly was that there really IS a difference in the quality of the "blacks" a projector can produce and how much contrast and details you can make out in dark scenes.

I tried calibrating the projector using calibrations suggested by ProjectorCentral.com. It was no help. On the movie The Green Lantern there is a smoke monster in space...

After getting this projector I noticed that all the dark scenes lacked detail. I tried tweaking all the settings after getting advice from AVSforum.com. The interesting thing was that if I played a movie from my computer or from an old DVD player then the shadow detail was there. But if I used my LG BD550 blue ray player then the shadow detail was missing. But the LG worked fine with my previous projector. I heard from the forum that these projectors seem to be sensitive to the HDMI source setting. So I tried setting the HDMI to RGB on both the projector and the player. But that did not help. Since returning the projector seemed like a pain (already mounted to the ceiling) I decided to buy another, newer and different brand of blue ray player. I ended up getting a Panasonic DMP-BDT220 Integrated Wi-Fi 3D Blu-ray DVD Player. I set it up and initially the black crush was still there. I changed the setting on the projector to RGB and on the blue ray I set it to "enhanced RGB" and that seems to have fixed it. The shadow detail was there. Phew!
The colors are a little too saturated but I'm sure I can fix that by tweaking the gamma and color settings.

My wife commented after all this tech drama "how does the average person ever figure this stuff out?!" I never thought twice about the shadow detail and color settings on my old Mitsubishi projector and LG blue ray combo. It just worked. I suppose I was lucky but I am surprised that this new Viewsonic was so picky about the source. Most people are not going to have the patience to try all the things I had to do to get it to work. I'm very happy with the quality of the image now but the setup seems a bit half baked to me.
