Here is what you need to know:
- The image measures 6" on the diagonal (3" wide by 5" tall).
- JPEG only, max 4000 x 4000 pixels
- The unit sits vertically. Landscape photos are automatically cropped to fill the screen. Landscape photos with subjects on the edges will crop out the subjects.
- The unit requires a dedicated SD memory card. Built-in memory is only 3MB.
- There is a coin type battery (CR2032 to be exact) that comes with the unit. The manual doesn't mention it but I'm pretty sure it is only to keep the clock and calendar when the AC power adapter is unplugged.
- The power cord is about 3' long.
The image quality and effectiveness of this product are excellent. We use it as a digital clock/calendar with the photo displayed up top. The time keeps quite well and the photos look excellent. I do not use the music function although I have tested it and it does work with mp3 audio files.
Now about that setup, one thing about this product is it seems like it can't handle photos that are too big. If you just put the photos on it it would recognize the pictures but the screen would be black. The fix for this is to download "Image resizer for Windows" as it allows you to easily resize any photo from windows by simply right clicking the photo and selecting resize from the menu. I found that this particular image viewer was able to handle photos resized on the "medium" option. This creates a new file in the same spot (for example if you re-sized "photo 1" to Medium it would create a new file "photo 1 (Medium)") You can just drag this medium file to the memory card and voila it works. This little annoyance may be just enough to deter some people but without it this is an excellent product.
I was getting the red circle with the dash for many of my uploaded pictures. After a couple hours I found that each image needs to fit the following criteria:
1. Around 1.5MB in size (might be smaller). If one has Photoshop CS5, one can easily batch re-size the file size. The quality loss is minimal.
2. Largest dimension can only be 4000 pixels. It scales pictures well that are 3:5 or 3:4.
I wish the manual told me about the file size limit and the power cable is very short so I docked a star.
The frame itself is great because it has these features:
1. Ability to turn off calendar (or have a calendar shown while pictures are cycled above it)
2. Landscape mode (all pictures need to either be landscape or portrait. You'll need to decide how you'll use this frame before putting pictures in)
3. Timed feature to specify hours when this will turn on or off.
I hope this helps!
I give it a 5 for screen quality. Truly amazing quality. The colors are vibrant, quality is detailed, backlight works great. Photos look amazing. You can set the view mode to landscape. It doesn't fill up the whole screen with landscape photos, but most of it. I am glad this option is availabe as 80%+ of my photos overall and it works out by far the best for my photo collection. There is an option for 'auto' display of landscape photos if you want to keep the frame as a portrait frame. The system chooses mostly the middle of a photo and it fills the screen.
Actually a bigger annoyance is that when you choose a random order for display of photos it does not seem random at all. I currently have about 1,200 photos and the same 30 or 40 out of say the first 100 show up every time after you start up. No way that can be random. It would be so much better if it had a true random number generator sequence. And really how hard could that have been to put in the software? This happens after auto shut down. After unplugging the unit. It is VERY annoying.
If you are like me and most of your photos are in landscape this is still a good buy. And you might like the auto display option more than I did. I didn't expect though that a random function would be that hard to implement. Really, really annoying non random 'random' function. Without that glitch, 4 or 5 star product.
