A lot of fun and useful designs

The images are black-and-white. These particular designs tend to have a lot of interweaving patterns vaguely like Keltic knotwork but more irregular and "organic looking". There was plenty of detail to work with, and several formats are included. I used the TIFFs and converted to my own GIFs so that I could make the white parts transparent; this was quick and easy to do. I've had a hard time finding clip art suitable for my website so I am glad to have found several of the Dover clipart books.

Great but could have been perfect...

The collection of images is great and I like that there is a short note on where the designs originate from.
Where this edition fails for me is that the images on the CD (the same images presented in the book), are only scanned images which are saved and converted in different formats. But still only scanned (no path). I would rather have had those images in a vector format (usable in programs such as illustrator which would have really made the use of those images perfect). I do not see the point of an associated program, free programs such as paint that come with windows offer also the basic functions for image treatment. So, basically, the CD only saves you the scanning time.

Ich habe 5 Sterne gewählt, weil ich einen Vergleich machen kann. - Ich hatte mir dieses Buch mit CD-Rom gekauft, weil ich auf mehr Motive gehofft habe. In meinem Buchregal habe ich das gleiche Buch bereits stehen, allerdings ohne CD. - Das war mir aus der Erinnerung abhanden gekommen. So, zum Thema:
In dem Buch Wikinger Kunstmotive ist die Qualität des Druckes im Buch sehr gut, die Motive lassen sich vom Blatt bereits exakt kopieren und studieren!!! - Und darauf kam es mir an. Ich arbeite mich in die mythologische Kunstwelt vor, die ich selten so gefunden habe. Dazu ist eine exakte Kopie von vorhanden Motiven notwendig.
In der CD finden sich weitere schöne Motive.
Auf jeden Fall zu empfehlen. Der Mehrpreis für die CD lohnt sich. Das Programm läßt sich ohne Reue auf den Computer laden und benutzen. - Ich überlegte sogar, ob ich das Schnitzen erlernen werde. Denn bei den langen Winterabenden, die mittlerweile über unser Land hinwegziehen, hätte ich dann eine Beschäftigung! :))

In diesem Heft sind Bilder und Muster, wie sie auf allen möglichen wikingischen Dingen gefunden wurden. Vom Kammmuster bis zum Bettpfostenmuster ist alles dabei. Jedes Bild hat eine kurze Info, wo das jeweilige Teil gefunden wurde. Leider fehlen die Jahreszahlen, in welche die Muster eingeordnet werden können. Also nicht unbedingt für Reenactors geeignet. Für alle anderen Wikinger-Darsteller ist das schon ok.
Ich nutze die Bilder als Vorlagen zum Bemalen von T-Shirts und als Muster zum Besticken unserer Gewandung.

The file formats are bit-maps and can be a touch frustrating for machine drivers (like laser engravers and routers) because they often need to be auto traced.

However, as a resource for hand-work and the exploration of an artistic style the book is indispensable.
