Viking Warrior Rising is book one in Asa Maria Bradley’s new Viking Warriors series. It revolves around a group of Viking warriors led by King Lief Skarsganger. Lief is tasked by Odin to protect the human realm and prevent Loki from causing Ragnarök, the time when the enemies of Norse gods team up to trigger natural disasters to wipe out gods and humans. With the aid of a new poison, Loki’s minions are disabling the warriors and making them susceptible.
Naya is kidnapped as a child and raised as a lab rat, injected with a mysterious serum that enhances her mental and physical abilities. She escapes and returns to rescue her brother who is virtually comatose from his cocktail of injections. Making her living as a cyber security expert, Naya keeps a low profile in order to prevent from being discovered as she desperately seeks a cure for her brother.
As Naya and Lief’s paths cross, they discover that she is Lief’s själsfrände, his true mate. Lief more easily accepts their fate, but he must convince Naya she is the chosen one for him.
In terms of the mythology, I feel like I am watching a Thor movie. Familiar characters are introduced – Odin, Freya, Loki – but are not the primary players. I like the premise of the story, but would like to see more of the gods play a part in the narrative. I am sure Loki has a lot of mischief planned for the Vikings and humans.
As a paranormal romance, this is all too familiar. There is an enhanced woman whose meets a paranormal hero. They discover that they are fated to be together. Often times, the heroine will be a modern woman paired with a traditional or old-fashion hero. This causes conflict that will have to be resolved for them to have a happily ever after. This part is a little disappointing. I did not expect such a traditional and well-played trope. With the untraditional mythology, I was hoping for a more creative storyline. Nonetheless, the story is well written and there is enough interest here for me to continue with the series.
I really loved this one, the vikings warrior are exactly like i imagined with some adapting more easily to our world and other more traditional : i love the second of Leif " Harrald" he is so grumpy in a sense but so determined to do well and when he see error of his way he sure admit it.
Irja is another secondary character, the medic of the team that i really like she is so calm, i do want to learn more about her.
The main couple in this case is Leif, their king ( or one among other as there are other groups of vikings with a king at their head around the world) and Naya. Leif always put his duty above the rest and he is really loyal to his men and valkyries ( yes females are equal warriors) when he is suddenly attracted to Naya he first thinks that the result of a poison but slowly he see how strong and special their bond is however he can't explain as he isn't a man used to expressed his feeling. The fact he lost his wife from his first life on earth doesn't help so he is a bit too protective and tries to cage Naya at first which of course is counterproductive.
Naya....i don't like her yet...she is intelligent she suffered a lot so her behaviour is understandable...i loved her loyalty to her brother but she was a bit too obtuse for my tastes. She doesn't believe Leif but at the same time she doesn't really try to understand, she doesn't trust him so she want to take what she can when she can then leave... i don't like that attitude. How she react when he needs her isn't one i appreciate either but she is good at her job and could be an asset to the group.
The story is well done we see the point of view of the viking warriors as well as Naya's and at the right time they merge together. the investigation is good but not the main focus and there are a lot of twists with a fast pace so the story and the romance moved quickly. Perhaps a bit too quickly even as when she went to take care of a client she is supposed to go back but suddenly that disappear from the story. Since the character of the client has my warning bells in havoc that bothered me. i can only hope we will come back to that part in a later book because really i feel something missing which is why i can't give a 5 stars despites how i loved this book.
All together it's a great universe i would be quite impatient to continue reading about it
The book was reminiscent of Lara Adrian’s Midnight Breed series with these dark protectors tasked with keeping humanity safe from creatures they aren’t even aware exist. I like that this is still very much paranormal romance but that we’re seeing magical Vikings with berserkers and our villain is Loki. It was refreshing to have something so original.
I found myself instantly interested in Naya and her story. I wanted to know more about her and her upbringing. She is the picture perfect heroine for me. Strong-willed, independent, and stubborn. Leif was a great hero but I didn’t feel as strongly invested in him as I did our heroine. He seemed to check all the alpha-hero boxes but I never felt that pull or connection. My interest was piqued enough though that I do plan to continue the series.
All in all, Viking Warrior Rising was a well thought out, unique, and action-filled novel that I genuinely enjoyed. It didn’t suck me in to the point that I blew through it in a day and just couldn’t put it down but I am interested to see where things go next and I think the series has some serious potential. I’m looking forward to starting Viking Warrior Rebel next.
