The show basically revolves around one Norse clan. Travis Fimmel plays Ragnar, who in the early episodes is constructed as a family man who yearns to break free from the oppression of his tribe's leader (Gabriel Byrne as Earl Haraldson). Setting on his own course, he recruits a small band of brothers to attempt a victorious raid to the west in defiance of the Earl's express wishes. There will be numerous repercussions to this decision as the various parties jostle for power and any grasp on true leadership is tenuous at best.Read more ›
During the first millenium, there was lively trade between Scandanavia and Germany, Spain, what is now Russia, and even North Africa. Norsemen were justifiably famous for their craftsmanship in building homes, barns, and other dwellings, for painting and needlework, and in fashioning arts from silver and pewter.Read more ›
Always cracks me up when folks leave comments like "watched one episode and bailed".
If I would have watched one episode of Battlestar Galactica, Lost, Walking Dead, Borgias, Sons of Anarchy....or even Game of Thrones....I would have been BORED out of my mind. (Well maybe not with GOT, as I read all the books feverishly)
Why? Because this is old fashioned story telling, folks. Good stories are told slowly and TV just got good.
Remember when Grandpa set by the campfire and told you that story thats forever ingrained your memory? One that you tell your kids, and your kids will tell theirs. Well, thats what its all about.
And its about time we got some quality for our time invested.
You want "one outs"? Shows you can pick up at any given time, any given year.....digress back to the 80's, or even the 90's. Its full of "one outs" where your not invested in the story line and characters. Thats not entertainment.
But this series...IS! Fantastic. Beautiful to look at, and wonderful to see unfold.
So...sit back, relax.....and let someone tell you a story. "Hurry up already" is for work, not home. :D
Watching history unfold from the perspective of these particular Viking invaders was fascinating, albeit violent and at times, stomach churning. Our present historical account is based on the records of monks and priests who were both literate as well as the frequently targeted victims.
Clearly, the Viking perspective is speculative, as they left few records, but I found it to be believable as well as wonderfully entertaining. It was a relieve to see there wasn't an attempt to whitewash or glamorize.
Kudos to the fine writers, excellent actors and committed directors for bringing history back to life. Double kudos for Vikings being renewed for a second season.

This series is very good. The characters look the part and are not too clean like in some series. Makes it that much more involving.Published 2 hours ago by Lucian D. Schmit
