This time, there are new faces amongst the old, Billy Baxter the ageing rock star, Ashley Wilmott-Fox an award-winning novelist and Rafe the sheep-shearer.
Billy should definitely have come with a warning, as he’s a bit of a Calamity Jane. From nearly driving into a funeral procession to running over Cynthia’s prize marrows, and calling an ambulance for a horsefly bite! He likes to think of himself as a big superstar. Unfortunately for him, the rest of the world doesn’t see him like that anymore, and the younger generation don’t even know who he is. His agent has sent him to the village to try and use it as therapy, and get him back in the limelight, but will his plan work?
Ashley (Ash), has moved to Little Perran to get away from the city life. He has had a rough few years, from being in a serious life-changing accident, to his fiancee walking out two months before their wedding, and his friends deserting him. He has lost the will to live, but can one resident help him to see the light at the end of the tunnel?
Rafe has come to Little Perran in search of the woman he fell in love with the moment he clapped eyes on her. There is just one problem, she has a boyfriend. Will he manage to get the girl of his dreams?
As well the newcomers, all the wonderful cast from the first book are back, and it was lovely to see what each of them had been up to. It was like meeting up with old friends again.
What I like about the Little Perran books is that Lynda puts so much effort in to making the stories believable, yet they are also full of excitement and lots of comical moments. You can just visualise yourself in the village, and I would love to be one of the residents, as everyone is so friendly, or nearly everyone is. It’s like one big family, and the sun always seems to shine.
A fun, summery read that takes you perfectly into the third and final instalment ‘A Summer Romance’, and will leave you satisfied that you have just read a perfect book.

Now there are a few new residents stirring life up a touch. The washed up, has been pop star Billy Baxter and the rather intriguing Ashley Wilmot-Fox an author who has suffered an accident which renders him disabled. Also Rafe Wylde the rather tasty farm labourer.
The book begins in classic comedic style .. Billy arrives at the same moment as Aunt Rose's funeral .. let's say he didn't endear himself to many, he continues to be a lively character, the unfortunate occurrence with the rotovator had me in stitches. He is a lovable rogue with potential.
Ashley comes across as a 'poor me' life has dealt me a cr*p hand type but maybe Milly can lift him out of the gloom.
Rafe, is the muscular hunk .. what are his intentions with his employer ?
This is a short novella, ideal for summer, short, sweet and hilarious in places with romance included. I would love to find a village like this, even though there is always plenty of gossip the community bond shines through in the books.
You don't need to read the first one to enjoy this but I would recommend it, to meet the characters and set the scene. 'A Village Romance' however ends on a critical cliff hangar so I would strongly suggest buying/reading them as a pair or curiosity will be unbearable!
I have written this review before completing 'A Summer Romance' so I don't inadvertently give spoilers but I am very keen to find out what happens!
Thanks to Lynda for the ARC and entertainment.
That bleeding dog is better groomed than I am... She feeds it caviar. I bloody ask you. It nearly bit my whatsit off once. All I was trying to do was get into my own bed. It was my bed of course. Comes to something when the only threesome you have with your tart is with her bloody poodle.
Try and keep the noise down if you would. We're having a funeral and the Sex Pistols weren't quite what we'd planned as our accompaniment to carry in the hearse...
He felt the earth hit his backside and cursed. The rotavator was off, like a Dr. Who monster, spitting out vegetation in its wake... 'I'm just doing a bit of gardening,' he said innocently.
I adored this amusing little novella about a tiny British village "in the country" with its special blend of residents and recent new arrivals. I was soon fascinated by each and every character as they proved to be a varied bunch, each with their own secrets and inner musings. A Village Romance was a quick and enticing read that had my attention from the start and kept me engaged throughout. The writing was humorous yet insightful and captivating in the midst of the fun. I love learning new words and phrases and being on the other side of 2 oceans from my Brit friends, I was on the back foot with several of the cultural references, sayings, and terms as they were completely unknown to me. It was fun looking them up and asking my Brit friends for help and have since added them to my Brit vernacular. I am eager to continue the story and more than ready to gobble up the next installment.
