Editorial Reviews

Leonard Nimoy stars in this critically lauded one-man performance that movingly reveals Vincent van Gogh as few knew him. Based on more than 500 letters exchanged between van Gogh and his brother Theo, the play examines the passion and torment of the extraordinary artist's life and death as seen through his brother's eyes. As van Gogh's paintings are projected in the background, Nimoy becomes both Theo van Gogh and Vincent in this compelling, touching portrayal that has thrilled theater-goers across the country.

Mr. Nimoy did a wonderful thing when he brought this play to many cities around the USA. When it was released on DVD I had to have a copy for my own library. He entertains and educates in this one man play. I knew only that Vincent had been declared a mad man who cut off his ear, but this DVD help me see the tortured soul inside this great artist. He makes a lovely statement during his play about artists and how they are preceived by their fans and the ordinary people, it rings very true for our generation as well as would it have back in Vincent's day. Buy it you won't be sorry. I even purchased it for a friend who I knew would appreciate the wonderful performance given in this play. Enjoy! Enjoy!

I have been a big fan of Leonard Nimoy for many years, and this wonderful DVD of his one-man play VINCENT has led me to admire him even more. Nimoy gives a very sincere and dramatic performance, and the story is true since it's all based on letters between Vincent Van Gogh and his brother Theo. The day after I watched the play, I ran it again but this time listening to the commentary track, and was again enthralled as Nimoy told fascinating background stories that showed his dedication to this project. For instance, he noted that many of Van Gogh's paintings have often been reproduced poorly in books, so Nimoy personally re-photographed many of them and offered his photos to museums and book publishers. This example illustrates Nimoy's passion about the art and life of Vincent Van Gogh that shines through in the play. Another bonus on the disc is an enjoyable slide show of Van Gogh's paintings and drawings. As you might guess, I highly recommend this DVD!!

I already owned a VHS copy of the production, however I decided to treat myself to a DVD version and I wasn't disappointed. Not only was the quality of the DVD better than the video, but, what a surprise to have the opportunity to listen to Leonard give a running commentary on the production, including lovely snippets such as the night the whole theatre was booked out by NBC and the problems of getting them away from the bar and foyer and into the theatre so that the production could actually start!!
Absolutely loved it - and very pleased that I decided to treat myself!!

It is a lovely play. If you will look, somewhere on the title page it will say, "Based on the play Van Gogh, by Phillip Stephens. I am Phillip Stephens. How could I not love it, and I throughly enjoy working with Mr. NImoy on his original production.

I am glad it is now available on DVD and can be enjoyed by so many others.

Thank you, Mr Nimoy, for this introduction to Vincent and his brother, Theo. Your immeasurable talent has brought to life the invisible and tragic cost of true dedication to sharing a talent without restraint. Watching this memorialization was a thrilling and enlightening adventure in history about how so much of what has past can contribute to every moment in the future. You have allowed us all to see the reflection of life from another's somewhat tilted point of view and revealed how the actions of a seemingly insignificant person can have such a profound impact on the lives of others. Likewise, your life and talent has also given to so many of us profound enhancement for many years. This unique portrait of yourself in the form of 2 brothers was an endearing and unexpected pleasure. Goodnight Sweet Prince and God Bless You and Your Family. You will live in our hearts forever.

I enjoyed this very much, and I also learned a lot about Vincent and Theo Van Gogh. Leonard Nimoy was certainly a gifted actor, and he certainly shines here. (I have to admit that I was almost tempted to stop watching fairly early in the narrative, when he used Vincent's voice as a preacher, and I hated its stridency, but that disappeared quickly, and the rest was fine...) Make sure to watch all the way to the end, since there is a great deal of new information and paintings to see after the stage part of the presentation. It's too bad that this was recorded via videotape, but, of course, it was 1981, and that's what there was back then. (Today's 1080p has gotten me very spoiled!) Great show. I highly recommend it, if only to see Leonard Nimoy display masterful acting chops that have nothing to do with galactic exploration.

Leonard Nimoy loved putting on this one man performance, and it is certainly a different role for him, because as Vincent van Gogh's brother Theo, he acts out for the audience different kinds of moods of Vincent, even down to a really good sermon reflective of Vincent's interest in becoming a Lutheran minister. This is touching, historical, and really good acting. A treasure.

Wonderful. I've seen this production several times and Leonard Nimoy's live, one man dramatization recorded at the old Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis is by far the best. Outside of Van Gogh's painting, drawings and diaries themselves, this is my all time favorite tribute to Van Gogh. I am so glad it has been released recently on DVD to be enjoyed again and again.
