About the Author
O.L. (Oliver Leland) Eggert has always been a reader of fantasy and sci-fi. His love of the genre spread to everything else in his life, so he ultimately became a big game/book/movie geek. He also enjoys the occasional anime. He currently resides in the Silicon Valley with his soon-to-be wife and two dogs: Arya and Dexter. Can you guess which characters the dogs are named after? This book blurs the line between young adult to new adult; there’s definitely cross-over appeal and I think if you read exclusively in either age group you’d still be able to enjoy this book. There’s cursing, but no worse than other young adult books these days. Apparently this is a self-published book, too, but I never would have guessed. Not a single editing error and the cover is gorgeous, if not better than what I see some traditional publishers pushing out.
The only negative about the whole book is that this is the first in a series, and the others aren’t out yet! Not to worry, though, O.L. Eggert leaves a lot of hints and mysteries for you to chew on in the meantime.
Overall I ADORED this book, more than any I've read in years, and can't wait for the next in the series. I’ll be recommending this to all my friends and family. I don’t want to be the only one suffering while I wait for book 2 to come out.
Where this book shines the most is in its characters and their interactions with each other and external forces. These characters are no shining examples of the traditional hero, but rather real, gritty people with as many layers as an onion. There is no bowing to the protagonist, but rather continuous inspiring realness that is evident from the beginning to the end of the story.
Vincent Survivor is a tale that clashes the real with the unreal. A world thought completely separate and unaffected by the supernatural is suddenly thrust into a magical apocalypse and expected to survive in extreme situations henceforth considered incredulous and fictitious.
There’s no doubt in my mind that this book will see large acclaim in the marketplace, whether that’s in a niche market or on a large scale. The author writes in such a way to truly engage the reader, with incredible skill for description and creating multifaceted characters.
Take my word for it, you will not regret giving this book a chance, not in the slightest.
Right from the beginning I became invested in the main characters. Their back story was realistic, well written and presented in a rapid, well integrated way as to not slow down the pace of the main plot. Vincent is a great character. He's flawed in so many ways but so very real and believable. He behaves exactly as someone with his background would and I loved it. He's constantly forced by those around him to do things against his own nature, forced to become the reluctant hero. It's very cleverly written!
The excitement begins as soon as you start reading the first page and does not stop until you close the book. Even though it's part of a series the book is rewarding in and of it's self. There is a very satisfying climax and a great lead in t0 the next book in the series. There are plenty of great twists and turns and some definite "oh s*** moments. There are great moments that make you laugh and others that might make you cry. Definitely one of the better first books I've ever read.
Looking forward to book two!!!!
Far to often we read or watch stories that are based on the same old psychological stereotypes because you relate to the person or you can become the main character as you read. It is a safe bet for authors. O.L. Eggert didn't take that route. Instead he showed how absolutely insane some of our escapist dreams can actually end up when you sprinkle in a little reality as to why we need to escape in the first place.
I will be keeping a close eye on future books in this series.

Okay, I gotta be honest. When I started out, I was thinking more like 3 stars. It felt a tad bit....well, corny.Read more
