• I love the print quality. Excellent in the best mode, and very fast in normal (worst) mode.
• Super small footprint and light weight because of the moving bed design. Much smaller than other printers of a 6x6x6 inches build volume (5.9")^3
• Excellent auto calibration. I believe this is "bed leveling" but I'm not totally sure. They just refer to it as calibration and it's super simple. My printer printed fine, out of the box, and I didn't have to tinker with any settings. It just works, with the caveats noted below in "The Bad".
• The price of the printer is super cheap, which is probably why you are reading this review. The overall summary is that YES, you can get good results from a bargain basement 3D printer WITHOUT being a DIYer with a lot of experience. This is my first printer at home, but I've used the one at work a few times.
• I couldn't this to work on my Mac at all. I read other people's complaints and have the same issue--it connects and always says "printer" busy. I loaded a virtual machine on my Mac with Windows 10, installed the XYZ software and it WORKS FINE under Windows using the same USB port, so it's definitely not the hardware. Mac users, beware, this might be a deal-breaker for you, which is sad, given the educational target market for this printer. I subtracted a whole star for this.
• The instructions are good for the topics they cover, but they are very incomplete and somewhat scattered. There are a lot of help videos, which is fine, but overall the documentation and website supporting this printer are pretty bad. You can tell this isn't a brand that's invested in a US marketing or support team. I subtracted another star for this flaw, leaving just 3 stars, but then added one back because this printer is just SO CHEAP. I am not surprised they don't have time for documentation or money for tech writers. To illustrate, I have no idea what Jog Mode or Z-Axis calibration do in the software and it's basically impossible to find documentation on your own. If someone knows these things or has a link, please comment. Fortunately, it seems to be working OK without this stuff, but it's really silly to have so many software options with so little understanding of what they do.
• No heated bed means you may have to use something called a "brim" to make a delicate model stick better. I had to look this up because I didn't know what this option meant, and the documentation is very poor (see above). Also, the masking tape sheet you put down will have to be replaced. Fancy printers have nice glass plates that keep your model toasty warm and stuck down until the job is done.
• The filament has a "chip" with RFID that means that you pay more per kg *and* you may not be able to use all the filament on a roll. This really stings, but the fact is that cheap filaments also vary widely in quality and may gum up your printer, so in practice you could be fine paying 50% more per kg for filament that you know works and for a printer that was half or a third the cost of similar models. Think of it like a gasoline car vs. a Tesla: the Tesla is WAY cheaper to run, but it sure does cost a lot up front. This printer is kind of the opposite, like the inkjets we now see from most brands. If you know enough to get good filament for a low cost and want to print a lot, don't buy this printer.
• The second issue about filament is that you're severely limited by what you can print with, currently PLA only. PLA is indeed very good and may be enough for you, but I would love to try some of the "ninja" flexible materials out there, which is impossible with this printer.
WHO SHOULD BUY THIS PRINTER
• First, you need Windows 10 with 4GB of RAM. My Mac wouldn't work at all, despite having the newest version of their software, which is a common issue other users have mentioned as well. I then tried an older Windows 10 PC with a decent dual-core processor but only 2GB of RAM and it wouldn't run their XYZ software. So I put a virtual box on my Mac with 4GB and RAM and that seems to work OK for printing (not great, but OK).
• If you want a tinker-free all in one printer and can guess at a few missing documentation steps, this is a very low-cost way to explore.
• If you're a very tech-savvy teacher and have kids old enough to learn 3D modeling and young enough not to care about the garish primary colors, buy this one. Else, buy a more subdued wireless version of this same printer for 20% to 30% more money.
• If you are a parent and your tech-savvy kid wants to explore and you have the patience to troubleshoot USB comm port issues and want an easy calibration experience, this should work well.
In the attached video, please the SD Card holder I downloaded from the web and printed on this printer. The video is a time-lapse in excellent mode, which took about 3 hours.
The experience of ordering and receiving an XYZ printer is made great by Amazon, but when the honeymoon is over and you actually use it for 2 spools, you'll wish you had just kept shopping. Why 2 spools? Because you won't believe that your user experience can suck so badly, and you'll make yourself believe that the bad experience with the first spool was just a fluke. It wasn't. Unfortunately, by the time you realize it and try to return it, it will be too late. You won't get relief from the company, but you will get an email that reads: "Please be advised that your purchase was already out of our 30 days return policy and for that we can neither refund nor replace the printer."
What sucks about XYZ printers (I have the da Vinci Mini, but it applies to nearly all of them)? Pretty much everything.
XYZ printers only work with these XYZ spools, which seems acceptable, but is not. Again, XYZ printers ONLY work with XYZ filament, so if there is a problem, you can't do anything about it. What constitutes a 'problem'? I'll provide a short list. I experienced each of these, as did many other people who posted about their frustrations online.
1) The proprietary XYZ printing software will suddenly report that you're out of ink. No you're not. You could have 50% left, but if the XYZ embedded chip in the spool misreports, too bad. I have multiple spools with 5% to 50% remaining filament, but can't use them because the software reports they are empty.
2) It's possible that XYZ embeds faulty chips in the spools but that won't be your only problem. The printer itself can malfunction and waste your expensive filament. After using the printer for 60 days and enjoying OCD levels of care to clean the nozzle and brush the gears, I still found myself in the morning cursing the printer when I returned to it after an overnight print job. Beside the printer malfunctions, the XYZ spools would often entangle (?!) and simply not turn to provide a continuous feed of filament. Its main job, to just turn and release filament, it intermittently fails at.
3) Apart from the spool jamming and the chip simply miscounting, there is also the possibility that your printer will look like its printing, but won't be. Hard to visualize, so I uploaded a video. The spool is 50% full and the extruder is going through all of the motions of printing ... but it isn't. Nothing actually prints. There is noise and your electricity is consumed, but the printer isn't printing.
I could give more examples, but hope I made my point and helped you make a decision.
