Vintage Menswear photographically documents a collection of men's garments of the twentieth century, falling under the three heads of sport, military, and workwear. The book is a welcome addition to the recent wave of publications on clothing history, particularly as it treats the relatively under-examined area of men's fashion. The book, however, proves a bit difficult to review, as the collection that it documents, and the quality of the photography, more than justify the publication of a work whose text may leave readers disappointed. The content of the text is not the problem, but the apparent lack of proofreading or editing should be an embarrassment to the author and the publisher alike. The copy seems to have been composed in haste and not glanced at thereafter. The principal author's other books that I have read, also in the genre of collections of fashion images, are not poorly written, so I wonder if the low stylistic standards here are attributable to the publisher, Laurence King Publishing. Or perhaps there was a failure of coordination between the three co-authors.? On a more specific note, the book would be improved by the addition of concise captions (with dates) associated with each image. On the whole I can recommend the book, though, owing to its presentation of excellent images of some fascinating historical garments.

The book is well designed and produced, but ultimately I was disappointed in the coverage. The items included very little-- indeed, hardly any-- what one would consider "fashion". The chapters are "Sports and Leisure", "Military", and "Workwear", and these areas are well and beautifully represented. But aside from the occasional Norfolk jacket, there is really no everyday clothing shown. Where is a sack suit, opera cape, top hat, or everyday shirt and trousers? What did bankers, tradesmen, farmers, etc. wear on the way to work, on their time off, or to church?

Well worth it if you are interested in the areas covered or in really nice book design. Otherwise, not so much.

Lots of photos and descriptions of items, although many pieces of clothing tend to be workwear with an emphasis on the practical which is unsurprising since many people are engaged in physical labour rather than sitting in an office. A good book to inspire your own designs.
