If you like the seminal first album by The New Riders...you will love this cd. It was takrn from a performance with Jerry Garcia on steel guitar and contains most of the first album tracks done live. "Dirty Business" goeson forever. Oh...to be around in 1971 during An Evening With The Grateful Dead and The New Riders of The Purple Sage. For this is what the NRPS set sounded like!

In mid 1986 Relix Records released this album assembled by David Nelson from a run of shows at the Capitol Theatre in which the New Riders opened for the Dead. The band had just finished recording their first album and the line up consisted of: John Dawson, David Nelson, Dave Torbert, Spencer Dryden and Jerry Garcia.

The release starts of with a nice version of I Don't Know You and is followed by a great performance of the rarely released Cecilia. What'cha Gonna Do is played at a faster tempo than the one found on the first album. Dirty Business is nicely drawn out. The second half of the release opens with Fair Chance To Know making it's first official album appearance. It's such a great song that it's quite surprising that it hadn't appeared on an album before. Garden Of Eden and Portland Woman are very nice versions. The first officially released cover of the Riders doing the Stones' Honky Tonk Woman is well played even if the vocals aren't the best. The sound quality is good coming from Betty Boards but Relix cds never had the best transfers/pressings.
