IT's like a lot of other sewing books out there: it's hip, great pictures, helpful tips, and filled with cute young hipster girls that make you want to make and wear the clothes they are modeling. The information is great, the time and research that has been put into it is something any seamstress/costumer/maker will appreciate.....
HOWEVER...the book falls signfiantly short when it comes to the patterns
I got home to make my first choice in the book...a dress. 100 pages. no joke. on top of the price of the book, i now also need 100 pages and the expensive ink AND the space to somehow assemble this behemoth? my next two choices were 75 and 65 printer pages, respectively....insane...
Here''s an idea for the creators/publishers or the folks who make these $10 books and then hike up the price that is supposedly justified by the "cd with patterns in the back that you can print yourself". my local craft store has days where they sell patterns for $1 each. if the people who made these books did the same thing, and there are 15 patterns in this book, then that would justify the $25 price tag. and given the high cost of ink and paper and time to print and assemble all these patterns, i would gladly pay to have them already included than paying full price to have to print and assemble nearly 100 pages for most of the cooler patterns in this book.
I will say that the instructions are nice. i appreciate that they aren't for a complete beginner, as these books tend to be. The pictures and history are great and inspirational, but that inspiration falls short when you try to go and make off of the cd the patterns the book gets you excited about.
As an added bonus, the dresses that the author uses to detail her material come from some super cute and AFFORDABLE websites and clothing designers that are definitely "off the beaten path". I have been a dedicated online shopper and fashion bargain hunter for almost five years now and this book helped feed that side of my personality as well.
I hope this is a helpful review for some... I never write reviews on anything so I hope it helps you make your choice. But I liked the book so much I couldn't pass up the opportunity to share it with other interested buyers!!
You do need to know how to sew, it is not a beginner's book (thankfully).

They have a wide range of patterns in this book, some are not my style, but I adored the whole outline of it all. I will be making some of these clothes.Published on January 23, 2014 by Whitney
