Editorial Reviews

Review

The Vintage Pattern Selector is a great resource for anyone who wants to make their own retro inspired clothes. It explores key styles and garments from the 1920s to 1970s and combines them with modern styling ideas, offering advice on choosing the right fabrics, colour palettes and styles ... Each chapter looks at the key styles from various decades, such as 1920s flapper dresses or 1950s circle skirts, and compares the traditional fabric, length, style and colours with those used today. It is educational, practical and clearly yet beautifully presented. What makes it stand out from other similar books is the inclusion of less obvious items like the pillbox hat and French knickers. -- Jennifer Schembri My Creative Diva --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

I wanted to give this book 2.5 stars.
IT's like a lot of other sewing books out there: it's hip, great pictures, helpful tips, and filled with cute young hipster girls that make you want to make and wear the clothes they are modeling. The information is great, the time and research that has been put into it is something any seamstress/costumer/maker will appreciate.....
HOWEVER...the book falls signfiantly short when it comes to the patterns
I got home to make my first choice in the book...a dress. 100 pages. no joke. on top of the price of the book, i now also need 100 pages and the expensive ink AND the space to somehow assemble this behemoth? my next two choices were 75 and 65 printer pages, respectively....insane...
Here''s an idea for the creators/publishers or the folks who make these $10 books and then hike up the price that is supposedly justified by the "cd with patterns in the back that you can print yourself". my local craft store has days where they sell patterns for $1 each. if the people who made these books did the same thing, and there are 15 patterns in this book, then that would justify the $25 price tag. and given the high cost of ink and paper and time to print and assemble all these patterns, i would gladly pay to have them already included than paying full price to have to print and assemble nearly 100 pages for most of the cooler patterns in this book.
I will say that the instructions are nice. i appreciate that they aren't for a complete beginner, as these books tend to be. The pictures and history are great and inspirational, but that inspiration falls short when you try to go and make off of the cd the patterns the book gets you excited about.

I am so impressed with this book its hard to put it into words! I read the entire book cover to cover in one sitting immediately after purchasing it. It is absolutely loaded with information about fashion trends and style techniques as they've emerged through the decades without being verbose. I haven't had a chance to work with any of the patterns yet but will definitely add to my review after I've tried a few of the designs. I am honestly astonished at how much I've learned in the past two hours while reading this book and I think that anyone who has even the most remote interest in vintage sewing must check out this book.

As an added bonus, the dresses that the author uses to detail her material come from some super cute and AFFORDABLE websites and clothing designers that are definitely "off the beaten path". I have been a dedicated online shopper and fashion bargain hunter for almost five years now and this book helped feed that side of my personality as well.

I hope this is a helpful review for some... I never write reviews on anything so I hope it helps you make your choice. But I liked the book so much I couldn't pass up the opportunity to share it with other interested buyers!!

I purchased this book on a whim because the price was right, there were nice pictures and I like vintage style but don't want to just recreate vintage patterns. I have to saw that I'm very happy that I did! I agree with another reviewer, when I received the book I spent an hour reading it, looking at all the details and admiring the patterns. Yes, you have to know how to sew to use the patterns (and they require a lot of paper)... but the patterns really look wonderful. I just received the book so I haven't actually made one yet but the designs are spot on, in that they are vintage but can easily be updated. Plus, the vintage designs are ones I haven't been able to find from other pattern makers. I have already started planning projects from this book. (I simply love the flapper dress pattern). Also, there really are 15 different patterns in the book. I was nervous that it would be only 5 patterns with 3 variations for each (similar to the BurdaStyle sewing handbook), so it's a great deal, $17 for 15 patterns!

I hope that Amazon decides to sell this book, I picked it up from the other bookstore. Was choosing between this one and the Burda book, and prefered this one. A wealth of information on vintage styles and ways to update them for today, as well as patterns (which I have not yet used) to make dresses, slips, camis, and pants.

You do need to know how to sew, it is not a beginner's book (thankfully).
