It's hard to believe that it's been nearly 30 years since Vince and Andy released "Wonderland." I'm sure that even in their wildest imagination they couldn't have believed they'd still be releasing quality music this far into their career. It's kind of remarkable when you think about it. Sure, there have been a few stinkers along the way and their incomparable run of top singles has long since ended, but to sound this vital and rejuvenated on their 16th (!!!) studio album is a testament to just how skilled and prolific they really are.

"The Violet Flame" builds nicely on the template established on "Tomorrow's World," which saw Frankmusic modernizing the sound a bit (even if the vocal compression was a silly misstep). Vince and Any one-upped it this time around, enlisting uber-producer/remixer Richard X to man the controls. As a longtime fan of Richard X's work, this is a match made in heaven, and probably the best artist/producer combo since Stephen Hague produced "The Innocents." Clearly Richard X knows Vince and Andy's strengths and capitalizes on them -- the driving rhythms (this is a straight up dance record, folks), catchy choruses, and Andy's still-pristine vocals (how does it he do it? I mean, really, is there anyone out there with better range?) are the stars here, just as they should be.

"The Violet Flame" opens with three sure-fire thumpers in "The Dead of Night," "Elevation," and "Reason." They won't go down as all-time classics, but damn if they don't want to make get up and dance. I admit the first time I heard "Elevation" I was just *yearning* for the killer chorus to hit me with a right hook that never came. I'm so accustomed to it (perhaps spoiled) that I felt a bit let down. However, I've grown to love it.

Erasure - The Violet Flame – New Album 2014

Is it 1984 or 2014? Close your eyes and listen. Can you imagine a two-person “Alternative 80’s Rock,” or “New Wave,” or “Dance Music” band making it successfully back on to the pop charts consistently after almost 30 years? Give Erasure’s new “The Violet Flame” a listen and see what is going on in the new/old world of music. Erasure remains soulfully intense, relevant and appropriately cheesy at the same time.

Erasure, now grouped as part of the Electronic (or EDM) music generation, ranks as one of 2014’s best-rated iTunes releases. Erasure, made up of legendary keyboardist Vince Clarke (Depeche Mode, Yaz, Erasure) and soulful singer Andy Bell manage to reinvent themselves with spectacular reviews and big sales with a new record (or is it an album or LP) or just plain download “The Violet Flame” released Sept. 22, 2014.

Truth is, the sound of the new Erasure is intense, new, old and compelling. Professional and fan reviews of the new Erasure exceed a 4.5 overall rating from an audience that probably has limited memory of Depeche Mode or Yaz…. but that’s OK, Erasure can be “new” again.

Many artists who made big records in the 80’s (e.g. Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel, Steve Winwood), inspired fans to go back and check out their early and entire catalog. Well, that can happen in the digital age even faster with countless Erasure classics an iTunes, Spotify or Pandora button away. Revolution, after all, is about returning to the greatness of the past… this time with a modern twist to make it better.

If you don’t like keyboards or the 80’s sound, you can skip “The Violet Flame”… this is not The Black Keys nor is it Mumford & Sons (both great modern music), but totally different.

For me, the first time I listened to this album it felt like finding a favorite old comfy tee/sweatshirt you thought you lost during a move or lover stole/threw away to hurt you just that little bit more. I love it. I've now listened to it 4 times since buying this morning (loooong dog walks). I think "Sacred" and "Dead of Night" are my early favs. I've been with them since the beginning and will be a fan until the end. Astonishingly, I am seeing them on October 1 in Royal Oak, MI and again, 2 days later, in Chicago. Friends in both areas wanted to go and got the "It wouldn't be the same without you" treatment. What's a guy to do?! I saw the Wild! tour and it was amazing. Buy this album. I'm so glad I did. It's fun and just perfect.

One of Erasure's best in a long time. I'm a fan from way back and sometimes they get lugubrious and overdone but this album is trimmed down and gets back to their solid, dance-oriented sound while feeling contemporary. Nice work!

A lot of good music and lyrics. I usually only listen to a selection of songs on any of the albums. After a week and at least ten listens, I still listen to the whole album. Some songs are slow and break up the momentum of the album that carries you but are still good enough to not make you skip to the next song. I highly recommend it. It is one of my new favorite albums.

After the amazing Snow Globe, I was really looking forward to the next all-new CD of music from Erasure. While my first listen didn't sell me, I quickly found the gem that this CD is! It reminded me a bit of Cowboy - I quickly skimmed through the first few seconds of each song, not really caring much for the songs - but once I actually sat and listened to each song in its entirety, I found out what a wonderful CD it was. The standout tracks, for me, are Be the One, Sacred, and Under the Wave - in that order. These are definitely classic Erasure tunes and the ones I find myself going back to over and over. This was a welcomed addition to their catalog, after the disappointment of Tomorrow's World. Way to go Erasure - loving this CD more with every listen!
