A portrait of famed Chilean singer and folklorist Violeta Parra filled with her musical work, her memories, her loves and her hopes.

The film awarded the World Cinema Jury Prize (Dramatic) at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, and is based on a biography book, written by Angel Parra, Violeta's son. He collaborated on the film that depicts Violeta' road to becoming considered one of Chile's greatest folklorists and artists. It chronicles her guitar playing at a very young age, the ambience of her musician father's haunts, and the rural settings in Chile.
The film follows Violeta in her project of studying Chilean folk music in order to preserve and carry forward traditional composition styles to form the genre now known as New Chilean Music. It shows her seeking out old musicians and asking them to sing or strum the songs they knew.
It covers her invitations abroad to Europe and Soviet Union. The movie also portrays the events in Chile leading up to the tragic death of her baby daughter Rosita during her absence.
The film covers her tumultuous relationship with Swiss flautist, Gilbert Favre. It follows the diversification of her artistic output, including her oil painting, and mixed media tapestry.
It follows Violeta and Gilbert's stay in Geneva and Paris. Upon their return, they broke up and Violeta's energy was invested in reviving a unique version of a Peña, a community center for the arts and political activism. Her tent hosted musical spectacles and she and her children also lived there. At other times, however, the tent was desolate or it was too rainy and cold to be hospitable, and Violeta suffered from poverty and loneliness

This movie helped me understand what went on with this talented and tenacious woman. She didn't just sit in a studio and write some songs. She had some lofty goals and went out to make sure they came to fruition. She wanted to play music, so she went out and found someone to teach her. Not to the music store on the corner, she walked the Andes! She wanted her art displayed in the Louvre, so she told them the importance and they displayed her wonderful tapestries in the Louvre. She sang about the people and the people loved it. She was a passionate woman who loved hard and lived hard. The loving hard, I'm sure, is what did her in. I think Francisca Gavilan did a fantastic job at acting and singing.

Violeta was a revelation. Elements of the film we liked because we considered a difficult task to do a dramatized story look so real. Fully recommended. Thanks Amazon
