Set in recognisably human times, the Violinist by CR Tyra tells a story of monsters and those they prey upon. For a society protected by music, the monsters exist in two perspectives; we see them in terms of dread and in memories – the fear of their return and the idea that just at the periphery of this world are monsters; and in the second we the monsters from their own perspective as a part of the reality that is centuries into an alternative future. I found the dread far more engaging than the actual monsters who were perhaps too ordinary.

The Violinist is Lucien Mooncaster, a musician or more specifically, a violinist. His family’s history has borne a recluse happier lost in books and music than dealing with the people around him. The Violinist is a mash-up of eras. It blends the past, present and future to create a fantasy world the Tyra brings to life with vivid descriptions of its architecture, flora and people. Inserts such as “Lucien remembered the countless hours spent reading of the dismal fate of the first age of mankind” quite cleverly give us clues to how our world and this one are related. There’s also a Stradivarius violin described in such detail that the reader can picture it perfectly.

The Violinist works well as a horror story and Tyra’s writing style extends its appeal – its style is literary and descriptive. In fact, the author says via email, the subject matter of the book grew and developed over time but originally spurred from his love for both dark fantasy themes and Greek mythology. He decided to blend the two influences after hearing Chopin’s Nocturne opus 72 # 1, which inspired the musical themes of the novel.

I’d recommend this book to lovers of The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova and Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke.

This is an unusual novel with a storyline that kept me guessing as it progressed. Told in multiple points of view, the tale moves between heroes and villains, and at times makes you question the sanity of all involved. Set in a future world far from now, ravaged by deadly monsters, action can be found at every turn. The story itself is not unheard of, but the way it's told and the way it unfolds presents something new. I found myself unsure of who could be trusted, and what was real and what was not. Great read! Highly recommend!

This piece of literature was able to grab a hold of me and is probably the most original work I’ve read in this genre in a long, long time. THE VIOLINIST
A great fictional story, the Violinist takes readers on a dramatic and adventurous journey. The plot behind this book is one we have seen before, yet this presentation feels original. It’s a book full of adventure, suspense and even a little horror. I don’t want to give anything away.
What stood out for me most was near the beginning. “I saw its eyes and by God I wish I hadn’t! When I met the evil thing’s gaze… I felt I was… peering directly into Hell.” These words compelled me to read more vigilant as I turned the page. The story develops. It introduces new supporting characters. Its climactic ending is not one you might expect.
This is not a quick read, nor would you want it to be. This tale brings forth an artistically dark story that I would love to read again in the future. This is a n easy 4-Star read!

I haven’t read for a long time and recently trying out this book through kindle. In the past I love adventure / fantasy / horror type. By just reading through one chapter, it captures everything I'm looking for, it is well written and keeps me going to the end of the chapter. You should able to read couple chapters before buy so see for yourself, and beware of the lioness!

This book is a page-turner! Horror and fantasy fans will be riveted by the twists and turns, and the short chapters and fast-paced action make it impossible to put down. Characters that are simultaneously flawed and sympathetic draw the reader into a feeling of immersion in Tyra's universe, a dark alternate future Earth with a distinctly steampunk atmosphere. I will definitely be awaiting the next story!

Fantastic original story that keeps you on your toes and makes you want to binge read like you would binge a show on Netflix. Would love to see more original ideas and stories like this than your stereotypical cookie cutter story we see so much today! Bravo!
