Setup: It is in the box pretty much ready to go. We snapped on the rotor guards and plugged in the battery for charge. Ours must have been pre-charged, since the first charging only took about 30 minutes before the light turned green (though it was only at 87% when we hooked it up). Once we were ready, we cleared a space in the house for trim adjustments. I spent about 15 minutes getting used to the control sensitivity and adjusting the trim, which I probably overdid a few times due to my lack of skill.
Flight: With about 20 minutes worth of playing around with it, I developed the skill to get it going around the house without crashing. My 10 and 12 year old were flying it outside with no issues on their first flight, just had problems with take-off and landing. I attempted to use the auto-takeoff feature, but found it jumped up too high to start off and we are using it in a space bordered by trees so it made us feel a little claustrophobic. The controls are very responsive, and the flight is amazing even in a light breeze, which surprised me because it is very light. It does not do well in a gust. If the gust is short lived, the unit will automatically attempt to compensate, get blown away about 30 feet or so, and all is good. If it is sustained, you can bet the between the auto compensation and your attempts to compensate, it will end up crashed.
Durability: I have crashed this several times onto concrete, walls, and trees. It comes with replacement blades, but I haven't broken one yet. The camera amazingly still works after several hard landings over concrete. The finish is pretty well dinged up, but that hasn't irritated me. I do worry about the flimsy feel of it, but it has taken a lot of beatings and come back strong. The exposed gearing of each blade is a bit disconcerting, too, but again, it has held strong.
Flight time: It comes with 1 battery that lasts ~12-20 minutes depending on how you fly it, and if you are streaming video. If you are doing the beginner thing, which is taking off, hovering a bit and doing some manuevering, you will probably squeeze over 20 minutes out of it. As I get more time airborne without landing, I get less flight time (of course). Also, building confidence will have you flying higher and faster, which will take you down to the low end of the range. Get a spare battery (or two).
Camera: The video streaming is not very good. You can fly by camera, but the production value of the video you take will not be very good. Also, it is very easy to get out of range of the camera. In my house the video is good enough that I fly it out of sight with the camera, navigating tight corners and terrorizing the dogs, but to enjoy it outside, you will fly it out of range quickly. There is a record to SD feature that I have not used yet. If the camera is truly 720 and 30 fps, I would imagine this is the only way to take advantage, I just haven't bother to slip a card in.
Overall, I recommend for anyone like me that was looking for a transition flier before they build up the confidence and make a 1k or higher investment. I was able to prove I could fly one and then a few people let me use their higher end models. If you don't like flying this (and haven't been spoiled with a higher end copter), you are out less money than if you went all in right off the bat. This is super fun to play with!
Update: Still cannot get this to fly correctly. The controls just don't seem to "save" the settings so each flight you have to reset the trim. Very annoying because my ten year old son can't really fly it.
