There's got to be a better way!
I tried dental treats, but I'm pretty sure my cats weren't really chewing them. No, we needed to go back to brushing. I thought, "If I were a cat, what flavor of toothpaste would I want?"
So, I searched Amazon for fish- or chicken-flavored toothpaste. I found this brand and purchased the poultry flavor.
My cats really aren't fans of toothbrushing in general. So, I started by letting them have a very small taste of the paste. They loved it. Then, I introduced them to the paste on the tip of an oral swab. The final step was getting in some actual brush action.
My cats still do not adore their daily dental hygiene time, but this toothpaste makes the experience much easier for all involved parties. Both cats typically come to me when they hear me preparing for their brushing session. When it's time to be brushed, each cat actually will grab my wrist with both paws to pull the toothpaste-tipped swab closer. I let each cat have a tiny taste before brushing begins.
I'm very happy that my cats like this toothpaste and--kind of, sort of--look forward to brushing sessions. My cats used to resist brushing so much; I never thought I'd be brushing their teeth daily!
My vet explained that it's not the physical action of brushing the teeth that's important, because this toothpaste has enzymes that break down the tartar, so you just need to smear it around the teeth. I started brushing his teeth daily and very quickly noticed an improvement. His teeth have been cleaner and cleaner the longer I use the product. I missed a period of time and the tartar immediately started building up again; returned to using the product and it went away. I now use it every day. Along with an antler to chew on, his teeth are looking very clean and healthy and he got a good checkup from the vet at our last visit!
My dog likes the flavor. He's not crazy about the "brushing" (I use a fingertip brush to smear the toothpaste around on his teeth), but he puts up with it because he likes the taste. It takes less than 30 seconds a day.
We tried the c.e.t vanilla mint toothpaste and I loved it, but my dog did not so I tried a couple other enzymatic toothpastes from the petstores.. My dog hated it. He used to love having his teeth brushed but with those he began squirming and turning his head constantly. The vet I work at sells this and recommends it so I decided to purchase a tube off Amazon for an add on item.. When I first introduced the poultry flavor toothpaste to my 3yr old gsd he loved it and licked it right off of my finger.. Day two of brushing and I said "teeth time!" He literally was waiting and licking his chops for me to start. He sat still and allowed me to go over spots with no problem.. Happy dog mom! Totally different dog from before.
This same night I tried it on my mom's 10 yr old boxer/sharpei mix.. She's never really had any dental care at all.. Although she was nervous at first.. After licking it off my finger her eyes lit up with excitement.. So I grabbed a finger brush and went to town in her mouth.
Happy dogs, happy dog owners. I will continue to recommend and purchase this product.
