Editorial Reviews
From Library Journal
Rigorous ecumenical scholarship undergirds this dissertation-based investigation of the portrayal of the mother of Jesus in selected early Christian writings. Foskett (religion, Wake-Forest Univ.) focuses on Scripture (e.g., Luke, Acts), but she also compares and contrasts cultural understandings of Mary as virgin ("parthenos") in the second-century Protoevangelium of James, and further analyzes Greco-Roman and Christian portrayals of virginity in Leucippe and Clitophon, Daphnis and Chloe, Acts of Paul and Thecla, and Acts of Peter. The work cites ancient medical texts and explores a multiplicity of connotations associated with the sexual status of virginity, including power, prophecy, and liberation. This is not a devotional or contemplative study of the Virgin Mary or her reported historical apparitions, but rather a look at variant meanings of such status in antiquity and the impact on Mary's subsequent depiction and cult. This unique approach among the many and continuing publications on Mary adds to the collective discourse, as the theological mystery surrounding the Incarnation remains for believers. The book is appropriate primarily for scholarly collections. Anna M. Donnelly, St. John's Univ. Lib., Jamaica, NY

How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.
