From the Author
Thank you for getting my new, official, "Virgin Diet Cookbook." I want you to SUCCEED.... Because losing weight means a different kind of life. Here's a true fact: The faster you lose, (especially at the beginning) the more likely you are to CONTINUE and stay on track. And a GREAT cookbook is a ticket to delicious food - forever. After I wrote The Virgin Diet book, EVERYONE was asking me for recipes. So for the last year, I've been collecting and compiling recipes, which I'm now releasing as the official Virgin Diet Cookbook. YES, it's here!
The best part of this is, after a year of traveling across the country, and meeting & talking to many of you at PBS visits, book signings, speaking engagements - or just stopped in the aisle at Whole Foods, I've learned a few things from you all. Things I've added into this cookbook. Little gems and insights and info that will make it even MORE valuable to you.
SO.... If you've never done The Virgin Diet, this is your entry point. You can start HERE, with just the cookbook, because I've outlined the entire Virgin Diet in there. If you want The Virgin Diet book, awesome. Go get it. I recommend it highly (haha). But if you just need to start with this, you can.
And let me know how it goes for you! Connect with me on Facebook.
BEST wishes, JJ Virgin --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

My point is that many of the recipes are just cost prohibitive. And I KNOW I KNOW you are going to tell me, what cost is your health worth to you? I agree - but there HAS to be some type of moderation -I can not spend $500 a week sourcing grass fed lamb, bison, beef and wild caught halibut, scallops etc. For the regular family/person - this costs too much. And I am aware of the study that shows that eating healthier with organic choices only adds $2 a day - well, trust me - NOT the JJ VIRGIN diet - lol - you're adding about $75 a day eating like this.
Now, having kvetched about the sheer costs of things - JJ VIRGIN looks friggin amazing - so this stuff works! I don't ever argue the method. There is a ton of work in this lifestyle - and I know - we did the raw thing for a while - so trust me when I say that food becomes the center of your universe.
Honestly, I just don't want to make shopping, prepping and food that much of a priority.
There are terrible food allergies out there and if you suspect you have one - go at this - it is awesome. The science behind this program as far as I can tell is centered loosely around a ketogenic diet (NOT the one Dr. Atkins used in the 60's - too much protein). This one is based around more fat and vegetables. You can google ketogenic and find Dr. Mercola and many others that have a slightly less expensive way of doing this.
Ultimately - JJ VIRGIN is awesome, looks amazing, her energy has NO LIMITS - especially when you account for her age. Downside - expensive and food obsessive.
Google some youtube stuff and watch her - she has lots of free stuff and a newsletter at her website. And if this resonates for you - get the book.
In the meantime - forget the WHITES - sugar, processed wheat, chips, crackers - anything that comes in a box, tube or package. Add veggies, hummus and some proteins. That's the cheapo version of this lifestyle. Paleo-ish Ketogenic.
*Swap Lists. You'll find a list of healthy food items you can swap for unhealthy foods. For example, swap pasta for spaghetti squash or wheat flour for almond or coconut flour. There are more than 30 "swap foods" on this handy list.
* Healing foods. You'll find a detailed list of healing foods for your body. Find natural food choices to heal digestive problems, skin disorders, inflammation, heart disease, aging, brain function and more.
*What to Toss. You'll find a list of foods to toss from your cupboards. Out of sight, out of mind!
*150 Recipes. This is the most valuable aspect of the book. Previously I purchased a book that claimed to be a "JJ Virgin Cookbook" by another another author, and was hugely disappointed by the deceptive title! I discovered the knock-off cookbooks were flawed and included ingredients not permitted in the eating program. If you want accurate recipes for the program, use this book written by JJ Virgin.
*Restaurant Guide For Travel and Dining Out. Find general travel strategies for how to maintain healthy eating when you are away from home. Included is a list of "best choice" and "worst choice" options for dining out.
* Meal Plans. While the original JJ Diet book does not include meal plans, her cookbook does! You'll find some great plans for Fast Weight Loss (chapter 13), Vegan and Vegetarian (chapter 14), Diabetes and Pre-Diabetes (chapter 15), Paleo/Low Carb (chapter 16), Family (chapter 17), On the Go (chapter 18) and On a Budget (chapter 19). Each menu plan includes a prepared shopping list for the week. Very convenient!
Some of my favorites from the cookbook include: Blueberry Power Muffins, Thanksgiving Turkey Wrap with Cranberry Sauce, Roasted Sweet Potato Salad, Cinnamon Roasted Pecans,Chicken Sloppy Joes Over Brown Rice,Creamy Sweet Potato Soup and Turkey Chili. At first the ingredient list might appear intimidating...many recipes include 12 items! If you LOOK CLOSER, they are seasonings and spices! You'll find a resource guide in the back of the book in case you are unable to find these ingredients locally.
For anyone serious about long-term, permanent weight loss I highly recommend this cookbook as a supplement to the JJ Virgin Diet Book. Don't take a shortcut and read this cookbook...you'll want to read the diet book to understand the concepts of the program.
The non-recipe information is also very good. She describes some of the lesser known ingredients in detail and offers several types of meal plans. Whether you are a vegetarian, paleo, family....she has you covered. Definitely a good resource for healthy eating. I am deducting one start just because I would have liked to have seen more simple recipes
