Editorial Reviews

Review

"Mind blown! Virtual Arcana will have you questioning everything; wondering what is real and what is not. In the end, this story will leave you breathless and begging for more."
Amy @ Once Upon a Book Blog

"If you're looking for a mind-bending, sci-fi touting, romantic good time, you can't do better than Virtual Arcana."
Jessica Nicole @ Ramblings on Readings

From the Author

Originally, I released Virtual Arcana serial style in 7 short episodes of around 15-20k each.
The serial experiment was fun, but readers said they'd prefer it in the same format as my other stories. When my readers speak, I listen.
Now, due to popular request, the first "season" is available in one long book.
Book 2, Virtual Override will also be a full-length novel.

This series was totally awesome for anyone who likes sci-fi with a twist. There's action, mystery, romance, cool tech, twists and turns, and just plain coolness. When it was released in serials/ chapters, I'd bounce in excitement waiting to get the next addition. I'm so happy it was released as a hardback! Everyone needs to go get a copy now!

When I read this series I read it one at a time as she wrote them. Here you will be lucky enough to read them all in succession. Any way so I thought I would give you my reviews of each one in a combination of paragraphs so it might sound disjointed, but here it is:
This story gets more intriguing with each installment. I like how the story is developing and of course I can't wait to find out what happens next. And I want to say to Xander, "Just kiss her already!!!!!" but I guess she needs to figure out what she is feeling before that will happen. SIGH!!!
There are so many twists and turns and it is hard to know what is real and what is not. Xander is more involved in her life in this installment and he finally kisses her which is what I have been waiting for. Another man becomes involved though and her statement about not wanting to be in a love triangle may end up happening anyway, but that remains to be seen. I am still voting for Xander. I can't wait to see what happens next!!!!
I must admit that this is a very fascinating story. It is beginning to feel a lot like the Twilight Zone. It is strange and disorienting and spooky. It is hard to know what is real and what is not. I think I will be glad when I know what is actually happening, but I am enjoying the ride so to speak. I am wondering if everything that has happened is really all in her mind and she is stuck in a coma or something. I feel rather creepy while I am reading it, but I can’t put it down and I am dying to know what happens next.
Wow this one was extreme! Some of the things that happened left me cringing and hoping that they weren't real only to find out that they were. The evil in this book is really bad and I hope he gets what is coming to him. People like that are despicable.

When I started reading the Virtual Arcana series it was torture. Each book was just an "episode" that was short and sweet and over so quickly I would desperately be looking around for my next fix. It's almost unfair of the author to leave me hanging so many times. But that's what good books like Virtual Arcana do - they leave you happy but always wanting more.

But now the entire season one is out all at once, and new readers don't have to experience the frustration of waiting for weeks for the next book to come out.

What's the best part of Virtual Arcana? The idea of jumping into your favorite book and getting to live inside it, as the characters. What reader hasn't wished that was a possibility?

If you enjoy romance and suspense and plot twists, definitely get started on Virtual Arcana today!

This complicated mind trip is the perfect mix of The Matrix meets The Lake House! Virtual Arcana is by far the most creative series I have read. This is so unlike any other book out there. The ideal of a government stripping away everything and the only escape is through books is crazy. The characters were always changing and developing more depth with each chapter. I can't say to much because I hate spoliers! I highly recommend this dystopian mind trip if a book! You will not find anything like it out there!

Virtual Arcana is a series unlike any that I have read before. Not only is the book mind-bendingly trippy and twisted, but it is also the first full novel I have ever read in serial format. In case you do not know, a “serial” novel is one that is released in “parts” or “episodes”, much like the original release of a favorite graphic novel or television series. Each installment is released on a regular basis. This format works unbelievably well for the Virtual Arcana series, because each “episode” revolves around a single card in the tarot deck. Each arc moves swiftly through the story and each ending leaves you craving more.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: When it comes to her writing and storytelling skills, self-published author, Karen Hooper, can easily compete with any author backed by either of the “Big 6″. She takes you into the complicated “reality” of her story and gains possession of your heart and emotions, twisting them with every word she writes. This world is both futuristic a’ la The Matrix and yet reminiscent of a modern day society much like our own. If you are nostalgic for the very first “take me away” emotions originally manifested by that popular 90’s film trilogy, and are wanting to experience those same emotions anew – this is your series. It’s The Matrix tailored to a YA audience, seriously. (In fact, I’d love to see if you can pick out all of the sly YA references sprinkled throughout!)

Can you imagine a world where caffeine is illegal, fantasy is forbidden and heightened emotions are suppressed? That is the world in which Kelsey must live. Until the day she is noticed by a young man who promises her that there is more out there than what can be seen and controlled by the government.
