I don't see any reason to not recommend these.
The stereo headphones sound pretty good. My iPhone X (even in a slim case) fit properly in the headset. When I first put on the headset it began to fall forward due to the weight of my phone, but after adjusting the straps it stayed on better. In apps/games that supported the single-touch mechanism in the middle of the device, the button on the bottom-right corner of the headset worked to activate it and did not leave any marks against my phone’s screen. And the remote controller paired and stayed connected to my iPhone X, as visible from the Settings. (More on this below.)
After only an hour of off-and-on use, I was beginning to feel some pressure marks against the bridge of my nose and on my forehead. (Red mark was noticeable in the mirror.) After about an hour of not using the headset, the redness began to dissipate in feeling and visibility, though. The remote control, while paired and connected to my phone, did not seem to perform ANY function at all. (The indicator light showed my battery was good and the remote itself saw when buttons were being pressed. Nothing would ever happen, though.) Not in any game or app I tried it with. And not with any of the games that appeared on the App Store while doing the search directed to by the manual. The remote is completely useless. Also, the audio cable connector is extremely short. This would be fine if the Phone-Based VR experience actually was a complete one, but when the experience requires the removal of the phone constantly…it was just a pain that it wouldn’t stretch down a bit further.
The headset itself is decent, and may be an upgrade for some out there who are using inferior devices. If it was just the headset by itself, I’d have given it a 4-star rating. But it comes with a remote, and it doesn’t seem to do a single useful thing, so I had to go with a 3-star rating.
This isn’t really in regard to the headset itself, but partly, so I’m including it. I would have given this whole experience a 2-star rating, if I were to include the actual experience with the iPhone’s apps and games. The experience requires removing the headset, disconnecting the audio cable, picking an app/game, starting the app/game and verifying no buttons need to be pressed to access it properly and start it up, connecting the audio cable, securing the phone back into the headset, and then starting the experience. Only to need to remove the headset, open the phone door, disconnect the audio cable, and perform any actions on the phone needed to do anything again. Then repeating the whole thing…over and over and over again for what seem to be 2-3 minute experiences designed to bore the heck out of a person with extremely low-quality visuals. This wouldn’t have been so bad if the remote control actually performed some functions on the iPhone to help with switching from one game/app to another, or actually performing any in-game function other than the one-touch against the screen that the actual headset button would handle.
Specifically I was really impressed with how good the sound is, really impressed. I suppose I am used to usually just using cheap headphones, so this was a big improvement. I'm usually too lazy to put in headphones when playing a game with the GearVR. I didn't realize it came with a touch screen button as well, that makes default interactivity without the gamepad much easier.
Also, man, the performance of Google cardboard is better than what I was expecting. It seemed to be just as good if not better than what I got in GearVR.
Edit: Well I should bring my enthusiasm down a little. I think I was just so excited this worked at all. It's still not bad on an iPhone, it's not actually anywhere close to as good as a GearVR though if you're on Android (or Daydream is the best if you can do that). To be fair, my best iPhone is a 6s, and I feel like it would be the best experience on a newer phone with a larger screen. With a smaller screen phone it just feels like playing a game through binoculars. But hey, it's something. The sound is also really good, I'll often use this headset just for listening and the visor acts to shut me out of the world.
