Editorial Reviews

Over the past four decades, Musica Antiqua Koln has been one of the most influential, and often controversial, groups in the world of early music performance. Founded in 1973 as a chamber ensemble by Reinhard Goebel and fellow students from the Cologne Hochschule fur Musik, it immediately set the highest possible standards in the execution of baroque music.
The works performed here are drawn from an anthology of trio sonatas gathered together by Franz Rost, cantor to the margrave of Baden-Baden. One of the most important collections of string music from the period, it ranges from serious works in the tombeau and funerary genres, such as Schmeler s Lemento on the death of the Emperor Ferdinand III, through non-programmatic sonatas and suites, to music clearly designed with earhier sentiments in mind, such as C.H. Abel s Bataille and Schmelzer s humorous celebration of Polish bagpiping

I first encountered Music Antiqua Köln on this recording, issued in the U.S. on the Peters label in I believe the mid-late '70s. I was simply overwhelmed--with the beauty of the music, the virtuosity of the playing and the magnificent sonics. The musicians pictured on the album looked like scruffy German radicals of the time--bearded, unkempt hair, blue jeans and sneakers--all the typical attributes. I have treasured this LP for 40 years now and can recommend it unreservedly to a younger generation. To my mind, despite a plethora of subsequent recordings, Music Antiqua Köln has never sounded better, in fact rarely as good, as in this youthful incarnation. Reinhard Goebel's arm problems (he had to shift bow arms)didn't help, and then they aged, some of the brilliant original members left to pursue careers as soloists and then a sort of immaculate, virtuosic glossiness crept in. (Evidenced for example in their 2004 recording of Bibers "Harmonia artificiosa," which can't compare with the inspired performance by "Manfredo" Kremer and the Rare Fruits Council--and this in music that was MAK's hallmark).

Of course, the pre-Bach German baroque music is itself gorgeous.
