During the 1980s, the CIA recruited and trained Muslim operatives to fight the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Later, the CIA would move those operatives from Afghanistan to the Balkans, and then to Iraq, Libya, and Syria, traveling on illegal US visas. These US-backed and trained fighters would morph into an organization that is synonymous with jihadist terrorism: al-Qaeda.

J. Michael Springmann, a former US diplomat, names individuals and organizations that deny culpability. He analyzes the effects of a nebulous war on the US economy and infrastructure. After thirteen bloody years, Springmann exposes hypocrisy and deceit wrapped in a sullied flag of patriotism and honor.

About the Author

J. Michael Springmann served in the United States government as a diplomat with the State Department’s Foreign Service, with postings in Germany, India, and Saudi Arabia. He left federal service and currently practices law in the Washington, DC, area.

Springmann has been published in numerous foreign policy publications, including Covert Action Quarterly, Unclassified, Global Outlook, the Public Record, OpEdNews, and Foreign Policy Journal. He holds a JD from American University, in Washington, DC, as well as undergraduate and graduate degrees in international relations from Georgetown University and the Catholic University of America. In 2004, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee recognized Springmann as one of its Pro Bono Attorneys of the Year.

The author has successfully shed light on how we advertently or inadvertently sow the seeds of radicalism which eventually grow into terrorism.

I'm actually only still reading this exceptionally interesting book. I will need to read it again since it is quite involved and detailed -- yet, credible -- breathtakingly so. Once I get around to completing my thoughts on what Mr. Springmann has written, I'll most likely compose another review. But, for now my suggestion is that people definitely get a copy of this book and read it with an open mind. The beginning of the book is a bit choppy and a little disorganized, but once you really get into the major contents, the information about how our government operates around the world is quite stunning. I don't get the impression that Mr. Springmann has embellished the facts, but provided them in a very straightforward way. He is very brave, yet, truly patriotic, in revealing this information that most people would never have the opportunity to know.

Michael Springmann was a consular officer assigned to the US Consulate in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia during 1987-1989. He was forced by his CIA-directed consular supervisors to issue visas to the US for Saudi men, who were many times unsavory characters lacking most or all the qualifications for visas. Why would the CIA want to do this? Could it be, as Springmann states that these visa recipients were brought to the US for training and debriefing and subsequently became patsies for the CIA-- joining rebel forces to fight legitimate governments? After two years in Jeddah, during which time Springmann voiced strong opposition to the illegal issuance of visas he was forced to do, he was transferred and soon thereafter dismissed from service. Springmann cites evidence as to how specific policies like this contributed to the destruction of Iraq and Libya as well as significant suffering and death in other countries.

The author expresses a low opinion of many of his Foreign Service colleagues. Was he just difficult to get along with? Clearly he was not a ‘company’ man. Was he simply an honest-to-god whistleblower? This seems to be the case. Even now he says he has inordinate problems sending and receiving emails, and experiences mysterious computer crashes and daily robocalls.

It’s not the best written book I have laid my hands on; and the author often repeats himself throughout the book. But it provides an important window into how fundamentalist-leaning Middle Eastern men have been recruited and used by the US for questionable deeds often having devastating and far-reaching effects. It’s definitely worth the read.
