Praise for the Star Wars(r) novels of Timothy Zahn:
Specter Of The Past:
"Zahn returns splendidly to the ranks of Star Wars authors...absorbing reading. Label this one 'not just for Star Wars fans'--for sure!"
Heir To The Empire:
"Moves with a speed-of-light pace that captures the spirit of the movie trilogy so well, you can almost hear John Williams's soundtrack."
--The Providence Sunday Journal
Dark Force Rising:
"Zahn has perfectly captured the pace and flavor of the Star Wars movies. This is space opera at its best."
--The Sunday Oklahoman
The Last Command:
"Filled with characteristic Star Wars technology and cosmic battles...the detail and plot development far exceed what are possible in a two-hour movie."
--The Indianapolis Star

From the Inside Flap
Hugo Award-winning author Timothy Zahn brings his epic two-volume series The Hand of Thrawn to an explosive conclusion with a discovery that rocks the New Republic to its foundations--and threatens to resurrect the Empire.
The Empire's master plan is under way. The New Republic is on the verge of civil war and the rumor that the legendary Admiral Thrawn has returned from the dead is rallying the Imperial forces. Now Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, and their allies face the challenge of their lives. They must infiltrate a hidden fortress filled with Imperial fanatics, rendezvous with a double-dealing Imperial commander, and journey into enemy territory to learn the identity of those responsible for an act of unthinkable genocide. But most important of all is the truth about Thrawn. In his hands--alive or dead--rests the fate of the New Republic.

I also didn't like the implications that the past ten years of Luke's life have been shadowed by the Dark Side. Luke's idealism and nobility are the most appealing traits of his character--he's never going to have Han's witty humor or Leia's gritty drive. I don't object to him making mistakes and learning from them, but somehow his moral crisis instigated by Mara tarnished his character without giving him a chance for redemption. Sadly dissatisfying for a Zahn book.
Honestly? I think Luke is either gay or asexual, both of which would be far more interesting character arcs than this series of badly matched women partners he stumbles his way through seemingly doomed relationships with. Come out of the closet, Luke. We'll love you more than ever.
I have really enjoyed all these books. Zahn is a very good writer and I was very entertained by both of these series. They read quite easily and he has a nice balance between action and character development and includes a nice sense of descriptiveness without being too detailed. I just checked out Survivor's Quest from the library and plan to read the rest of Zahn's Star Wars novels, then we'll see where I go from there!
Vision Of The Future was incredible. There is no other way to put it. It was everything I have come to expect from an author of Zahn's caliber. Being a Mara fanatic, I was over joyed to find that Zahn has stopped the abuse of Mara's character and even repaired the damaged done by previous authors. If you havn't read this book... What are you waiting for...???? GO GET IT!
I just pray that the day comes soon when there are more novels produced by Mr. Zahn continuing from where this book leaves off. And hopefully not set too far in the Future either. I want to know what happens the next day after ceremony of Peace...
